what is manufactured during the Haber process
ammonia
what are the reactants
hydrogen and nitrogen gases (extracted from air and methane)
what is the balanced chemical equation
N2 (g) + 3H2 (g) ⇌ 2NH3 (g)
what pressure should this be done at
200 atmospheres
what temperature should this be done at
450 degrees celsius
what is the catalyst
iron
explain the 5 stages
H2 and N2 gases are pumped into the compressor through pipes
the gases are compressed to about 250 atmospheres inside the compressor
The pressurised gases are pumped into a tank containing layers of catalytic iron beads at a temperature of 450°C. Some of the hydrogen and nitrogen react to form ammonia in the reversible reaction
Unreacted H2 and N2 and product ammonia pass into a cooling tank. The ammonia is liquefied and removed to pressurised storage vessels
The unreacted H2 and N2 gases are recycled back into the system
