Schizophrenia
A chronic brain disorder that affects a person's ability to think, feel, and behave clearly, part of the Schizophrenia Spectrum & Other Psychotic Disorders.
Schizophreniform Disorder
A psychotic disorder with symptoms similar to schizophrenia, but lasting less than 6 months.
Schizoaffective Disorder
A chronic mental health condition characterized primarily by symptoms of schizophrenia, such as hallucinations or delusions, and symptoms of a mood disorder, such as mania and depression.
Delusional Disorder
A psychotic disorder characterized by persistent false beliefs that are not bizarre and could conceivably occur in real life.
Brief Psychotic Disorder
A sudden, short-term episode of psychotic behavior, such as delusions or hallucinations, that lasts for at least one day but less than one month.
Substance/Medication-Induced Psychotic Disorder
Psychosis caused by the use of or withdrawal from certain substances or medications.
Psychotic Disorder Associated with Another Medical Condition
Psychosis caused by a medical illness or condition.
Prodromal Stage
The period before the onset of serious symptoms of schizophrenia, characterized by less severe, but unusual behavior.
Expressed Emotion (EE)
A particular emotional communication style in families associated with relapse in schizophrenia, characterized by high levels of criticism, hostility, and over-involvement.
Deinstitutionalization
The process of replacing long-stay psychiatric hospitals with less isolated community mental health services.
Biological Interventions
Medical treatments such as medication used to treat Schizophrenia.
Psychosocial Interventions
Therapeutic approaches used in collaboration with biological interventions that focus on increasing medication compliance and helping patients function within their communities.
Behavioural family therapy
Educate families regarding the condition and its treatment, address communication & problem-solving skills to reduce stress and tension, and provide social support.
Assertive Community Treatment (ACT)
A multidisciplinary approach that shift from hospital treatment to community rehabilitation. It include psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, social workers, OTs and focus on illness management plus provide psychoeducation on symptoms & medication
Hallucination
A psychotic symptom of perceptual disturbance in which patients hear, see, or sense things that are not actually present.
