Define androgyny

  • A flexible gender role displays a balance of both masculine and feminine traits.

  • Sandra Bem challenged this concept suggesting that there are more than two genders.

  • She added androgynous to the masculine and feminine identities.

And that both traits are equal.

Measuring Androgyny Bem’s - SRI

  • Inventory made for measuring gender.

  • Self-report, has 60 traits (20m, 20f and 20n)

to produce scores across two dimensions:

  • masculinity; femininity and androgynous; undifferentiated.

  • Measured on a 7-point scale of American undergraduates, was done on 200 characteristics, judged by 100 people.

  • High test-retest reliability of over 0.9.

(+) androgyny is measured quantitatively

Bem's work on androgyny is quantitative and it is useful for research purposes like quantifying dependent variables.

However, Janet Spence suggests that qualitative methods offer a better understanding of gender.

For example, combining different scales, like the Personal attribute questionnaire, can add additional dimensions to Bem's masculinity-femininity dimension, suggesting that quantitative and qualitative approaches can be useful for studying various aspects of androgyny.

(+) Valid and reliable method to measure androgyny

A scale was created by 50 male and 50 female judges to rate 200 traits based on their representation of maleness and femaleness.

The 20 masculine and 20 feminine traits scored highest in each category.

The BSRI was then tested with over 1000 students, demonstrating its validity.

A follow-up study with a smaller sample and with the same students showed similar scores a month later, proving test-retest reliability, and confirming the test's validity and reliability.
