What is meant by species? (2)

- A group of individuals that are potentially able to breed amongst themselves

- To produce fertile offspring

What is meant by a population? (3)

- A group of organisms of the same species

- Occupying a particular space at a particular time

- That can potentially interbreed ‎

What is meant by a gene pool? (2)

- All of the alleles of all the genes of all the individuals

- In a population at any one time

What is meant by 'allele frequency'? (1)

The number of times an allele of a particular gene occurs within the gene pool

What is the hardy-weinberg principle? (3)

- Provides a mathematical model

- Which predicts that the allele frequencies in a population

- Will not change from generation to generation

What are the conditions that must be met for hardy-weinberg principle to apply? (4)

1. Population is large and isolated

2. Mating within the population is random

3. No mutations occur

4. There is no selection i.e. all alleles are likely to be passed to next generation
