Fourteen Points
A statement of principles for peace that was to be used for peace negotiations after World War I, proposed by President Woodrow Wilson.
League of Nations
An international organization established after World War I to promote peace and cooperation among countries, created by President Wilson's proposal.
Big Four
The leaders of the United Kingdom, France, the United States, and Italy who dominated the proceedings of the Paris Peace Conference.
Treaty of Versailles
The peace treaty that officially ended World War I, imposing heavy reparations and territorial losses on Germany.
War Guilt Clause (Article 231)
A clause in the Treaty of Versailles that required Germany to accept responsibility for starting World War I.
Reparations
Compensation required from Germany through the Treaty of Versailles for war damages, initially set at $33 billion.
Collective Security
A system for international peace and security, where each member state agrees to protect the others in case of aggression.
Covenant of the League
The charter that established the League of Nations and outlined its goals and operations, attached to the Treaty of Versailles.
Henry Cabot Lodge
The Republican Senate Majority Leader who opposed President Wilson's League of Nations and the Treaty of Versailles.
Isolationism
A foreign policy doctrine advocating that a country avoids alliances and international commitments, prevalent among U.S. Republicans at the time.
