Hz
The abbreviation for Frequency in Cycles per second.
Full-mesh network
A network terminology where every switch in a network is connected to all other switches.
Range (Transducer)
The maximum and minimum measurement values a transducer can translate.
Essential elements of a radio system
A transmitter, transmitter antenna, receiving antenna, and receiver.
Manometer
An instrument used to measure pressure.
Heating effect in stator winding
The result of doubling the A.C. line current in a generator stator, which causes the heating effect to quadruple.
Zener Barrier
A unit made to obtain intrinsic safety in installations for instrumentation in hazardous areas.
High Voltage (HV)
Electrical equipment operating over levels of 1000V ac or 1500V dc.
Instrument Calibration
The process of comparing input and output values against a documented standard.
Combined Insulation Resistance (IR)
The total resistance of three identical 30 Mohm hot-plates on the same supply, which equals 10 Mohm.
PCI (Electronic Hardware)
An abbreviation meaning Power Control Bridge in the context of specific marine hardware diagrams.
FIC
The letter combination representing a flow indicating controller on a process and instrumentation diagram.
Blue (Cabling)
The special color required for cabling in installations of INTRINSICALLY SAFE equipment where color coding is relied upon.
I/P Transducer
A transducer that converts a known electric current to a pressure proportional to that current.
100BASE-TX
A baseband medium type indicating 100Mbps over two pair of CAT5 cable.
Simplex
The type of operation used in radio and television broadcasting where transmission occurs in one direction.
Closed loop feedback system
A type of control system illustrated by a block diagram containing a feedback path (H(w)) to a comparator.
Reverse power trip
An alternator safety feature that prevents the machine from 'motoring' when supplied by other parallel alternators.
Dead Band
In measurement systems, the change needed in the input signal to produce a change in the output signal.
Conductance (G)
An important quantity in circuit analysis, measured in Siemens, expressed by the formula G=R1.
Thermistor
A temperature-sensitive semi-conductor device.
EPIRB Frequency
The frequency of 406 MHz used by the Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon in GMDSS.
Rectifier
The term for a diode used to convert AC to DC.
Navtex
Navigational Telex, which operates at a working frequency of 518 kHz.
Short circuit protection
The primary function of fuses in a motor starter circuit.
Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) Thermistor
A temperature sensitive device characterized by a relatively non-linear characteristic.
Generic Data Frame
A transmission unit consisting of a flag pattern, address field, control field, text, and block check.
Low Voltage (Marine Rating)
The classification for a ship's electrical system rated at 690 Volts.
