Atmosfeer (Atmosphere)
An air layer held around the earth thanks to gravity.
Weer (Weather)
The state of the atmosphere for a short time and over a small area.
Hoogtelijnen (Contour lines)
Lines on a map that indicate the same altitude.
Hoogtecijfers (Elevation numbers)
Numbers that precisely indicate the height of the contour lines.
Isotherm
A line on a map connecting places with the same temperature.
Isohyeet (Isohyet)
A line on a map connecting places with the same amount of precipitation.
Klimaat (Climate)
The average state of the atmosphere for a long time (30 years) over a large area.
Tj
The annual temperature.
Sj
The temperature range, calculated as Tw+Tk.
Nj
The annual precipitation.
Natural Greenhouse Effect
Ensures the average temperature of the lowest layer of the atmosphere is 15∘C, providing a warming of 33∘C.
Latitude and Temperature Relationship
Temperature decreases from the equator towards the poles because the illuminated surface area becomes larger.
Ocean and Temperature (Summer)
The ocean is cold, making the air above it cold, which cools areas near the coast.
Ocean and Temperature (Winter)
The ocean is warm, making the air above it warm, which warms areas near the coast.
Temperature and Altitude Relationship
As you rise higher, the space between molecules becomes larger, allowing heat to escape and making it colder.
Loefzijde (Windward side)
The side of a mountain with rising, moist air where clouds release precipitation.
Lijzijde (Leeward side)
The side of a mountain with descending, dry air where clouds have no precipitation.
Luchtdruk (Air pressure)
The weight of the air pressing down on the Earth's surface.
Barometer
An instrument used to measure air pressure.
Isobaar (Isobar)
A line on a map connecting places with the same air pressure.
Hoog luchtdrukgebied (High pressure area)
An area where the air pressure value is higher than 1015hPa.
Laag luchtdrukgebied (Low pressure area)
An area where the air pressure value is lower than 1010hPa.
Wind
The movement of air molecules over the Earth's surface from high pressure to low pressure to correct an imbalance.
