Usually and appeal to creation or the gods, to bear witness to the covenant

Blessings and curses

Conditional statements that hinge upon the obedience of the involved parties

Oath

A pledge by the involved parties to uphold the covenant

Tips for interpretation of Covenants

1) They are unique since they are agreements between two unequal parties

2) Unique that the stipulations are not a means of securing the grace of God

Two types of Biblical Laws

Caustic and Apodictic

Caustic Laws

Constructed in an "if, then" format

Apodictic Law

Constructed in a "do this, not this" format

3 main types of laws

Ethical, Cultic, and civil

Ethical Laws

Grounded in the Nature of God; Violating these is an attack on God

Cultic Law

Ritual laws involving religious practices

Civil Laws

Governmental laws pertaining to crimes, inheritance regulations, etc.

Tips for the interpretation of Biblical Laws

1) Laws were never meant to be a means of salvation, only pointing to why we need Jesus

2) The laws are not exhaustive in nature

3) Caustic Laws that are ethical are still applicable even if the punishments are different
