He was a Dutch explorer that Founded the colony of New Amsterdam (New York/ Manhattan Island). He also discovered the Hudson River.

How is New Amsterdam important?

It was bought by Hudson from the Indians for a “box of beads” that cost $27. It was a city with a large slave trade as well as having a natural harbor.

The Duke of New York (english) wanted land and threatened the Government of New Amsterdam. The English take over New Amsterdam and the Duke of New York and renames New Amsterdam, New York.

He was a German who became a teaching monk after being struck by lightning. He posted 95 complaints on the door of the Church and refused. He was excommunicated for this and created the Lutheran Faith.

He is from the Tudor dynasty and married his older brothers(Aurthor) ex wife Catherine. He had 6 wives in total. His only daughter Mary was crowned as queen after he passed.

After bring crowned she outlawed the Church of England and stated everyone must convert back to Catholic. She had the nickname “Bloody Mary” because she had many burned at the stake for not converting.

The half sister of Queen Mary she brought stability back to England. She did not marry and was known as the “Virgin Queen”. One of her lovers, Sir Walter Raleigh) persuades her to get into colonization.

It was the first English speaking colony that was placed in North Carolina. It was set up as protection from Indian attacks and invaders.

What happened to Roanoke? What was it known as?

All of the people were gone in 1950 when ships returned to Roanoke. Nobody is sure what happened. It is known as the “Lost Colony”.

King Philip of Spain hated Queen Elizabeth and built a huge navy to invade and conquer England. Philip wanted to capture and torture the Queen.

What happened in Jamestown?

It was a tribute from James to Queen Elizabeth. The Native Americans teach the Europeans in the colony how to fish, hunt, and farm in the New World. The Indians promised to help the colonists get productive in the Spring.

The INdians cut off the English and this time was known as the “Starving Time”. There was a shortage of food and colonists rob graves of their dead for meat (cannibalism).

Makes friends with the Indians and says they are equal to white people and starts smoking with them. He starts planting and selling tobacco in Europe. When he comes back to the New World he gets killed in an Indian raid which caused tension to raise.

They are Europeans brought to the Americas who were used before black slaves. Their contract was 7 years long and stated masters give food, clothing, shelter, and passage to the new world for labor.
