What is a hypothesis?
Testable: you must be able to test it
Falsifiable: there is a possibility it could be disproven
What is a Theory?
Scientific theory is the foundation of scientific knowledge and it is thoroughly tested and confirmed explanation for a set of observations or phenomena
What is the difference between a theory and hypothesis?
A theory is tested and confirmed however is a more broad explanation while a hypothesis that is tested can have an outcome of being confirmed or falsifiable
What is an independent variable?
The variable that is being changed
What is a dependent variable?
What happens as a result of the independent variable
What is a control?
not exposed to treatment (the independent variable)
What is the Placebo affect?
When participants know they are getting the drug/treatment, they can convince themselves it is working
What is a placebo?
A “fake” drug given to participants
What is Applied Science?
Using science to solve real-world problems
What is the Human Genome Project?
A 13 year collaborative effort among researchers to map the human genome (Find our DNA sequence)
Applied Science: learn about genetic diseases and find cures
What is Antibiotics?
Chemicals that are good at killing bacteria

He is an example of basic science: A microbiologist who accidently left the lid open during his experiment with staphylococcus bacteria and mold took over his sample. He found that the mold was great at killing bacteria and discovered the antibiotic, penicillin
