Imperialism

the policy of extending a nation's authority over other countries by economic, political, social, or military means

Doctrine

a stated principle of government policy, mainly in foreign or military affairs

Protectorate

a state that is controlled and protected by another state

Rough Riders

U.S. Cavalry group headed up by Theodore Roosevelt during the Spanish American War; famous for their efforts at the Battle of San Juan Hill.

USS Maine

US Naval ship sunk in Havana Harbor in Cuba; contribued to the outbreak of the Spanish-American War

Treaty of Paris 1898

ended the Spanish-American War and gave America limited control of Cuba, Guam, Puerto Rico and the Philippines

Roosevelt Corollary

established the idea of the U.S. as an international policing power; specifically aimed at keeping European nations out of Latin America by threat of military force from the U.S.

Yellow Journalism

journalism that is based upon sensationalism and crude exaggeration

White Man's Burden

stemming from a poem by Rudyard Kipling, it was the idea that Europeans ad Americans had a responsibility to "civilize" other peoples

Assimilationist

someone who believes persons of one culture should take on the cultural traditions and/or behavior of a different population or group
