Mitosis
the process of making somatic cells through cell division
What are the main phases of Mitosis
IPMAT - Interphase, prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase
Interphase
The cell grows, performs normal functions and duplicates its DNA and organelles in preparation for cell division.
Prophase
Chromatin condenses into visible chromosomes. Nuclear membranes starts to dissolve and mitotic spindle begin to form.
Metaphase
Chromosomes are aligned on the cell’s equatorial plane. spindle fibers are attached to the centromeres.
anaphase
centromeres split and sister chromatids are pulled apart by spindle fibres towards opposite poles. Each chromatid becomes a chromosome
Telophase and Cytokenisis
Chromosomes reach cell poles and begin to decondense into chromatin. The nuclear membrane reforms around the new sets of chromosomes and form two nuclei. The process of cell division (cytokenisis) begins in this phase - resulting in two daughter cells.
