Main characteristics include real-time events, ubiquitous connectivity, and machine learning.

Information or events are available as they happen.
Ubiquitous
Users are always connected to the Internet.
Machine Learning
Computers can create data and make decisions based on past actions.
Uniform Resource Locator (URL)
A web address used to identify objects on the World Wide Web.
Internet
A global information space interconnected by hyperlinks and URLs.
Web 1.0
Static web pages (flat pages) that users could not manipulate; born around 1989.

Inventor of the World Wide Web.
ICT
Information and Communications Technology; technologies providing access to information via telecommunications.
Semantic Web
A web of linked data that machines can interpret to provide smarter services.
Security
The state of being free from danger or threat; protection of information.
Internet of Things (IoT)
Physical objects that connect and exchange data with other devices.
Assistive Media
Software or hardware to help people with disabilities access information.
Augmented Reality (AR)
Overlays digital content onto the real world.
Virtual Reality (VR)
An immersive computer-generated environment.
Social Networks
Sites that connect people with shared interests or backgrounds.
Bookmarking sites
Sites that store and manage links.
Social News
Users post news items or links to sources.
Media Sharing
Upload and share media content.

Harmony among all parts of a design.
