Nervous System Communication
Uses electrical currents generated by ion gradients across membranes.
Neurons
Cells that exploit ion gradients to generate rapid electrical signals.
Voltage
The driving force causing separation of charged particles.
Current
The flow or movement of charged particles.
Resistance
The opposition to the flow of charged particles.
Resting Membrane Potential (RMP)
The potential difference across the membrane due to separation of charges.
Extracellular Fluid (ECF)
Fluid outside the cells with high sodium concentration.
Intracellular Fluid (ICF)
Fluid inside the cells with high potassium concentration.
Ion Channels
Proteins that allow specific ions to pass through the membrane.
Sodium-Potassium Pump
A mechanism that actively transports sodium out and potassium into the cell.
