Quantitative Research
Research that focuses on quantifiable variables, using large samples and statistical descriptions.
Qualitative Research
Research that focuses on behavior in natural settings, collecting non-numerical data from small groups.
Naturalistic Observation
A descriptive method where observations are made in a natural social setting, also known as field observation or ethnography.
Participant Observation
A research method where the researcher takes an active insider role in the study, potentially compromising objectivity.
Systematic Observation
The careful observation of specific behaviors in a specific setting, which is often quantifiable.
Experience Sampling Method (ESM)
A technique used to collect data from participants at specific moments in their daily lives.
Day Reconstruction Method (DRM)
A self-reporting method where participants recount previous day's activities and emotions.
Archival Research
A research method that uses previously compiled information to answer research questions.
Content Analysis
The systematic analysis of existing documents, requiring coding systems to quantify information.
Reactivity
The possibility that the presence of the observer will affect the behavior of those being observed.
