Pneumonia
Inflammation of lung parenchyma caused by various microorganisms.
Pneumonitis
A broader term describing inflammation of lung tissue.
Risk factors for pneumonia
Includes age, decreased immunity, congregate settings, inhalation of pollutants, prolonged use of PPIs, use of tobacco, alcohol, or illicit drugs, medical conditions that impair breathing or swallowing, and preexisting lung diseases.
HAP
Hospital acquired pneumonia, which is more difficult to treat than community-acquired pneumonia (CAP).
VAP
Ventilator-associated pneumonia, which occurs at least 48 hours after intubation.
Empyema
A collection of pus in the pleural space, potentially a complication of pneumonia.
ARDS
Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, a serious complication seen in pneumonia cases.
Cystic Fibrosis
An autosomal recessive disease causing thick, viscous secretions affecting multiple organs, particularly the lungs.
Asthma
A chronic inflammatory disease of the airways characterized by hyperresponsiveness, mucosal edema, and mucus production.
RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus)
A highly contagious viral infection, common in infants and young children, causing bronchiolitis and pneumonia.
Otitis Media
Inflammation or infection of the middle ear, characterized by bulging, opaque tympanic membrane.
Otitis Externa
Inflammation or infection of the external auditory canal, commonly known as swimmer's ear.
COVID-19
An acute respiratory illness caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, primarily transmitted through respiratory droplets.
Bronchoscopy
A diagnostic procedure used to visualize the airways and obtain samples.
Dyspnea
Shortness of breath, a symptom associated with various respiratory disorders.
Vaccination for pneumonia
Vaccination helps prevent pneumococcal pneumonia and influenza, recommended for at-risk populations.
Antipyretics
Medications used to reduce fever, often used in the treatment of infections like pneumonia.
Tachypnea
Increased respiratory rate, often a sign of respiratory distress.
Inhaled corticosteroids
Medications used to control asthma by reducing inflammation in the airways.
COVID-19 Diagnostics
Includes RT-PCR and rapid antigen tests for detecting viral RNA.
Sputum culture
A laboratory test used to identify causative agents of respiratory infections.
