Data Governance
An approach to managing information across an entire organization.
Relational Database
A database model based on the concept of two-dimensional tables, containing records and attributes.
Big Data
Diverse, high-volume, high-velocity information assets requiring new forms of processing for decision making.
Normalization
A method for analyzing and reducing a relational database to minimize redundancy and maximize data integrity.
Data Warehouse
A repository of historical data organized by subject to support decision makers in an organization.
Master Data Management
A strategy for data governance involving processes that maintain consistent, accurate, and timely master data.
Entity
A person, place, thing, or event in the context of a relational database.
Primary Key
A field in a database that uniquely identifies each record.
Knowledge Management
A process that helps organizations manipulate important knowledge for benefits.
Tacit Knowledge
Subjective, experiential knowledge that's often difficult to transfer.
Explicit Knowledge
Objective and technical knowledge like policies, procedures, and reports.
Database Management System (DBMS)
A set of programs that provide users with tools to create and manage a database.
Data Integrity
Ensuring data is accurate and consistent throughout a database.
Data Mart
A low-cost, scaled-down version of a data warehouse designed for specific end-user needs.
Query Language
Structured Query Language (SQL) used for interacting with databases.
Cardinality
Refers to the maximum number of times an instance of one entity can be associated with an instance in another entity.
Data Hierarchy
The structure of data from bits and bytes to fields, records, files, and databases.
Functional Dependencies
Describes the relationship between attributes in a database, where one attribute determines another.
Join Operation
Combines records from two or more tables to obtain related information.
Data Security
Measures to protect data from unauthorized access or corruption.
Data Quality
The accuracy, validity, reliability, and timeliness of data.
Knowledge Management System (KMS)
Systems that utilize technology to enhance and expedite knowledge management.
