How do different definitions of language (Floyd vs. Seiler & Beall) reflect the complexity of communication?
Compare symbols vs. broader system of signs/sounds/gestures
In what ways can language shape people’s perceptions and attitudes?
naming, indiscrimination, stereotyping, shaping values, polarization
Why is polarization dangerous in communication, and how does the pendulum effect escalate conflicts?
explain extremes, back-and-forth conflict, importance of moderation.
How can language reinforce or challenge sexism in society?
stereotypes, word choice, and inclusivity.
How are indiscrimination and stereotyping similar, and how do they differ in their impact on communication?
Both involve generalizations that ignore individual uniqueness. Indiscrimination = overemphasizing similarities, failing to see differences. Stereotyping = rigidly categorizing people/events/objects without considering uniqueness.
Compare polarization with sexism in language. How are both forms of communication limiting, and what makes them distinct?
Both restrict communication by oversimplifying reality. Polarization = framing issues in extremes (e.g., rich/poor, good/bad). Sexism = limiting or devaluing based on gender through language. Distinct because polarization affects broad social perspectives, while sexism specifically targets gender relations.
