Republic Act No. 9163
Also known as the National Service Training Program (NSTP) Act of 2001, it institutionalizes the NSTP in all higher education institutions with three program components: ROTC, CWTS, and LTS.
Republic Act No. 7077
Also known as the Citizen Armed Forces of the Philippines Reservist Act of 1991, it provides for the organization and development of the Citizen Armed Forces of the Philippines (CAFP) and authorizes the establishment of the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC).
Republic Act No. 10349
Also known as the Revised Armed Forces of the Philippines Modernization Act, it provides for the modernization and capability development of the AFP, including the development of a credible and responsive reserve force.
National Service Reserve Corps (NSRC)
A corps created under Section 11 of RA 9163, composed of graduates of the non-ROTC components (CWTS and LTS) who may be tapped by the State for literacy and civic welfare activities.
Father of the AFP
Title attributed to Lapu-Lapu following the Battle of Mactan on 27 April 1951, signaling the Filipino love for freedom.
Father of the Philippine Army
Title given to Andres Bonifacio, associated with the founding of the Katipunan on 07 July 1892.
Regular Force
The permanent military organization of the Armed Forces of the Philippines which is maintained in time of peace and war.
Reserve Force
The military organization that comes into physical existence only upon mobilization as called upon by the Commander-In-Chief due to a state of national emergency.
AFP Reserve Command (AFPRESCOM)
An AFP-wide support and separate unit organized on 01 April 1993 pursuant to General Order No. 22 GHQ, AFP and RA 7077 to serve as a base for rapid AFP expansion during emergencies.
Military Courtesy
The written, officially prescribed code of deportment (responsibility) for members of military establishments, representing acts of politeness, civility, and respect accorded to one another.
Military Discipline
The willingness to accept with conviction and without reservation the necessity for a common law that rules and coordinates the effort of a group.
Morale
The mental state and spirit of an individual or unit.
Salute
The most important and most common form of all military courtesies, executed as a basic exchange of greetings between military and/or uniformed services personnel.
Rating
A Philippine Navy term used to identify an occupational specialty based on aptitude, training, experience, knowledge, and skills of an individual.
Rate
A Philippine Navy term used to identify the level of achievement and expertise within an individual's rating, also called paygrade.
Rank
The combined rate and rating of an individual in the Philippine Navy.
Striker
A Philippine Navy term that applies to an individual in paygrades E1 to E3.
Petty Officer
A Philippine Navy term that applies to an individual in paygrades E4 to E7.
Drill
Movements by which a unit or individual is moved in an orderly, uniform manner from one place to another, executed in unison and with precision.
Ceremonies
Formations and movements in which a number of troops execute movements in unison and with precision, primarily to render honors and stimulate esprit de corps.
Alignment
A straight line upon which several elements or terms are formed, defined as the dressing of elements upon a straight line.
Arms Swing
The marching movement where arm swinging must be 6 inches straight to the front and 3 inches straight to the rear of trouser seams, with knuckles out facing forward and fingers formed into a fist with the thumb over the forefinger.
Base
The element on which a drill movement is regulated.
Cadence
The uniform rhythm in which a drill movement is executed.
Slow Time
A drill cadence at the rate of 60 counts or steps per minute, usually used during a funeral march.
Quick Time
A drill cadence executed at the rate of 120 counts or steps per minute.
Double Time
A drill cadence executed at the rate of 180 counts or steps per minute.
Cover
Aligning oneself directly behind the person to one's immediate front while maintaining correct distance.
Depth
The space from front to rear of any formation or position, assumed to be 12 inches for a man.
Distance
The space when elements are placed one behind the other, measured as an arm's length to the front plus 6 inches from the chest of one man to the back of the man immediately to his front.
Frontage
The space occupied by an element measured from one flank to the opposite flank, assumed to be 22 inches for a man.
Normal Interval
The lateral space between men measured from right to left by the man on the right holding his left arm shoulder high with fingers touching the right shoulder of the man to his left.
Close Interval
The lateral space between men measured from right to left by placing the heel of the left hand on the left hip even with the belt line, with the arm touching the arm of the man to the left.
Double Interval
The lateral space between men measured by raising both arms shoulder high so that fingertips touch the fingertips of the men to the right and left.
Administrative Cases
Military cases resulting in decisions not involving penal sanctions, requiring substantial evidence to gain positive adjudication.
Punitive Cases
Military cases resulting in judgments involving penal sanctions, requiring proof beyond reasonable doubt.
Article of War 105 (AW 105)
The law defining the disciplinary power of Commanding Officers over minor offenses, providing corrective and instructional measures.
Reprimand (under AW 105)
A punitive disciplinary action that places the offender in a non-promotable status for a period of one year from the date of imposition.
Admonition
A non-punitive disciplinary measure under Section 105 MCM intended purely for instructional or correctional purposes to create and maintain efficiency.
Republic Act No. 7055
An act dated 30 April 1991 that transferred jurisdiction over non-service-connected offenses to civil courts, reserving only service-connected military offenses under Articles of War for Court-Martial.
Summary Court-Martial (SCM)
A military tribunal consisting of one officer empowered to try non-capital or minor offenses for any person subject to military law except Officers, Cadets, or Probationary Officers.
Special Court-Martial (SPCM)
A military tribunal consisting of not less than three members empowered to try non-capital offenses under the Articles of War for any person subject to military law.
General Court-Martial (GCM)
A military tribunal consisting of not less than five members plus one Law Member (Judge Advocate), empowered to try service-connected offenses under the Articles of War.
Arrest
A type of pre-trial restraint where a person is restrained within certain limits, not by physical force, but by moral and legal obligation to obey the order.
Confinement
A type of pre-trial restraint where the accused is physically restrained either by imprisonment in a guardhouse or under the control of a guard.
