Special Education
A program offered to a child with special needs through individualized instruction.
Curriculum
The actual subject taught.
Equity
Providing support tailored to specific needs.
Equality
Giving the same source/resource despite individual backgrounds.
Accomodation
Allows students to learn without changing the curriculum (students adjust).
Modification
Alters what is taught to the student by changing the curriculum complexity (curriculum adjusts).
Main Goal of SPED
Empower students with disabilities to be independent.
AAC
Attentative Alternative Communication.
Multi Sensory Materials
Materials that engage more than one sense at a time to help identify and remember longer.
IEP
Individualized Education Program; a legal document tailored for children with special needs.
Early Intervention
Activities designed to provide assistance to a person with a disability.
Selective Placement
Placement that depends on the severity of the child's disability.
Learning Continuum
Range of learning opportunities and support that helps students move from their current level of knowledge to higher levels of learning.
LRE
Least Restrictive Environment; a guiding legal principle where students with and without disabilities learn together.
MRE
Most Restrictive Environment; setting where students receive more intensive services outside the regular classroom because their needs cannot be met in the LRE.
Mainstreaming
An option where students with disabilities learn in a regular classroom if they meet academic and behavioral expectations; student is part-time in regular classes and receives special education for the rest.
Inclusion
A philosophy following LRE where students with or without disabilities learn together in a regular classroom with needed support; student is placed full-time or nearly full-time in general classroom.
Individualized Planned
A dimension of special education designed for one person's needs rather than for everyone.
Specialized
A dimension of special education that uses different senses to make the student process content (includes accommodation and modification).
Intensive
A dimension of special education requiring instructions to have higher precision.
Goal Oriented
A dimension of special education focused on achieving specific learning based on student's needs.

A dimension of special education using strategies supported by reliable studies and evidence.
