COLREG Rule 5
Requires maintaining a proper lookout at all times by sight, hearing, and all available means appropriate to the circumstances.
COLREG Rule 6
Mandates traveling at a safe speed so proper and effective action can be taken to avoid collision.
COLREG Rule 13
Governs overtaking situations, where a vessel approaching another from more than 22.5∙ abaft the beam must keep clear.
COLREG Rule 14
Governs head-on situations for power-driven vessels meeting on reciprocal or nearly reciprocal courses, requiring both to alter course to starboard and pass port-to-port.
COLREG Rule 15
Governs crossing situations, requiring the power-driven vessel that has the other on her own starboard side to keep out of the way.
COLREG Rule 19
Governs the conduct of vessels not in sight of one another when navigating in or near areas of restricted visibility.
Masthead Light
A white light placed over the fore-and-aft centerline showing an unbroken light over an arc of the horizon of 225∙.
Sidelights
A green light on the starboard side and a red light on the port side, each showing an unbroken light over an arc of 112.5∙.
Sternlight
A white light placed as near as possible to the stern showing an unbroken light over an arc of 135∙.
Towing Light
A yellow light having the same arc characteristics as the sternlight (135∙).
Not Under Command (NUC)
A vessel unable to manoeuvre as required by COLREGs through some exceptional circumstance; indicated by two black balls as day shapes.
Restricted in Ability to Manoeuvre (RAM)
A vessel restricted in her ability to manoeuvre due to the nature of her work; indicated by a ball-diamond-ball day shape combination.
Constrained by Draught (CBD)
A power-driven vessel severely restricted in her ability to deviate from her course because of her draught in relation to available depth of water; indicated by a cylinder day shape.
