Antibiotics
Check for antibiotic allergies
Anticholinergics
Teach parents & child that it is used to dilate bronchi & ease respiratory effort
Antihistamine
Teach parent & child it may cause drowsiness & dry mouth
Beta-adrenergic agonist
Monitor for nervousness, jitteriness, & tachycardia
Corticosteroids
Teach child to rinse mouth with water after inhalation
Cough suppressants
Use only with a nonproductive cough in absence of wheezing
Decongestants
Do not administer to children < 6yrs & give with caution for children 6-12yrs
Expectorants
Encourage fluid intake & monitor breath sounds
Leukotriene receptor antagonist
administer in evenings
Mast cell stabilizers
Teach parents & child it is used to prevent release of histamine to decrease frequency & intensity of allergic reactions
Racemic epinephrine
used to treat croup - monitor for work of breathing & breath sounds
Respiratory Stimulants
Monitor drug levels for signs of toxicity
