explain how geology impacts the rate of erosion

the softer more permeable rock such as clay erodes quicker as they have weaker bonds between particles and more water infiltration encourages processes such as salt crystilisation and freeze thaw weatherign when temperatures drop

on discordant coatslines the rock type alternates meaning increasing rates of erosion this is becuase of differential erosion meanign sofetr rock erodes quicker than hard rock and Wave refraction occurs when waves approach a coastline and slow down in shallow water around headlands before the deeper water in bays. This causes the wave fronts to bend towards the headland, concentrating wave energy. As a result, erosion is more intense at headlands, leading to the formation of features such as caves, arches, stacks, and stumps.

New cards

explain the role of beaches in preventing erosion

the presence of a beach means that is absorbed more energy protecting the cliffs behind it and dispersing the energy along the beach so deposition occurs

3
New cards

explain the role of coastal managemetn on reducing erosion

hard and soft engineering such as sea walls and groynes reduce wave impacts

4
New cards

explain sub areil processes in affecting the rate of erosion

weathering and mass moveemtn will weaken cliffs and create piles of cliff which are easily eroded by the sea
