Strategic Competence
The ability to use verbal and nonverbal strategies to overcome communication difficulties and maintain effective communication.
This means knowing HOW to communicate — even when words fail, when understanding breaks down, or when the situation becomes challenging.
1. WHAT IF... YOU FORGET A WORD?
STRATEGIES TO TRY:
• Describe it: Explain what it looks like or does.
• Give an example: Show how it is used in context.
• Use a synonym: Find a word with a similar meaning.
• Use a gesture: Act it out or point to make your meaning clear.
2. WHAT IF... YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND SOMEONE?
STRATEGIES:
• Ask for clarification • Ask them to repeat • Ask for an example
3. WHAT IF... SOMEONE DOESN'T UNDERSTAND YOU?
STRATEGIES:
• Rephrase your message using different words
• Simplify your language and sentence structure
• Give an example to illustrate your point • Slow down your speech for better clarity
4. WHAT IF... YOU REALIZE
STRATEGIES:
• Correct yourself
• Explain what you meant • Check understanding
