7th Chord

A 4-note chord constructed off a root, 3rd, 5th and 7th, using either a major scale or a harmonic minor scale.

Major 7th Interval

The distance from the root to the 7th in a chord consisting of $11$ semitones.

Minor 7th Interval

The distance from the root to the 7th in a chord consisting of $10$ semitones.

Major 7 (maj7) Intervallic Construction

A 7th chord built with a Major 3rd ($4$ semitones), a Minor 3rd ($3$ semitones), and a Major 3rd ($4$ semitones).

Minor 7 (min7) Intervallic Construction

A 7th chord built with a Minor 3rd ($3$ semitones), a Major 3rd ($4$ semitones), and a Minor 3rd ($3$ semitones).

Dominant 7 (7) Intervallic Construction

A 7th chord built with a Major 3rd ($4$ semitones), a Minor 3rd ($3$ semitones), and a Minor 3rd ($3$ semitones).

Half-Diminished 7 ($\varnothing$) Intervallic Construction

A 7th chord built with a Minor 3rd ($3$ semitones), a Minor 3rd ($3$ semitones), and a Major 3rd ($4$ semitones).

Full Diminished 7th Chord

A chord quality created by stacking three minor 3rds.

Minor-major seventh chord ($i7$)

A chord built on the 1st degree of the harmonic minor scale containing a minor 3rd and a major 7th, often replaced by a minor triad due to its dissonance.

Half-diminished seventh chord ($ii^{\varnothing}7$)

An unstable chord used frequently in contemporary music that typically wants to move to a $V7$ chord.

Major seventh chord ($III^+7$)

A dissonant chord built on the 3rd degree of the harmonic minor scale consisting of an augmented triad with a major 7 on top.

Diminished seventh chord ($vii^o7$)

A chord constructed on the 7th scale degree of the harmonic minor that has a strong tendency to resolve to the tonic $i$ chord.

Dominant seventh chord ($V7$)

A chord that exists in both major and minor scales and strongly wants to resolve back to the tonic.
