Leadership
The process of persuading and inducing a group of people or followers to attain a desired objective.
Coercion
A method of leadership influence characterized by the use of fear and threats.
Assertion
A method of influence where the leader acts as the voice of the entire nursing department in a hospital.
Great Man Theory
A leadership theory suggesting that leaders are born and not developed.
Trait Theory
A theory identifying leadership based on basic characteristics such as personality, intelligence, and ability.
Charismatic Theory
A leadership theory that utilizes charismatic referent power and charm.
Situational Theory
A theory where leadership is determined on a case-to-case basis, and an individual can be a leader or a member depending on the situation.
Vroom-Yetion Expectancy Theory
A theory focused on the amount of participants needed in a certain group.
Contingency Theory

A mutual style of leadership that allows subordinates to participate in decision-making.
Laissez-faire Leader
A free-rein leader where no one makes active decisions; it is not recommended in healthcare due to the danger of negligence or malpractice.
Legitimate Power
Power sanctioned or given by an institution based on official rank or appointment.
Expert Power
Power derived from expertise or intelligence in a specific field.
Connection Power
Power based on linkages or connections to influential people.
Accountability
Legal liability arising from negligence.
Responsibility
A personal or professional obligation to a task.
Downward Communication
A channel of communication flowing from the top level to subordinates.
Horizontal Communication
