pH scale
A logarithmic scale that measures how acidic or basic a solution is, based on hydrogen ion concentration [H+]; pH = -log10[H+].
Logarithmic scale (base 10)
A scale where each unit change represents a tenfold (10x) change in the measured quantity.
Hydrogen ion concentration [H+]
The amount of free hydrogen ions in a solution; higher [H+] means greater acidity and lower pH.
pH = -log10[H+]
The equation relating pH to hydrogen ion concentration.
One pH unit change
Corresponds to a tenfold change in [H+]; a 2-unit change corresponds to a 100× change.
