Non-Verbal Communication
The transmission of messages, feelings, attitudes, or meanings without relying solely on spoken or written words.
Facial Expressions
Movements of the face that communicate emotions or reactions, such as smiling to show friendliness.
Eye Behavior
The use of eye contact and gaze, such as looking at a speaker to show attention.
Gestures
Movements of hands, arms, or other body parts, such as nodding to show agreement.
Posture
The position or orientation of the body, such as sitting upright during a formal discussion.
Body Movement
Physical movements that convey meaning, such as moving closer to hear clearly.
Personal Space
The physical distance maintained between people during communication.
Touch
Communication through physical contact when appropriate, such as a handshake in a formal setting.
Appearance
Clothing and overall presentation, such as wearing appropriate attire for a formal event.
Paralinguistic Cues
Vocal features accompanying words, including appropriate volume, pitch, rate, and pauses.
Clear Communication
A characteristic of effective communication where ideas are easy to understand rather than vague.
Coherent Communication
A characteristic of effective communication where ideas are logically connected and arranged, usually following a structure of Beginning -> Development -> Conclusion.
Audience Appropriateness
Communication that considers the age, background, knowledge, relationship, expectations, and communication needs of the audience.
Purpose Appropriateness
Communication tailored to its specific aim, which may be to inform, narrate, express, or persuade/advocate.
Context Appropriateness
Communication that considers where, when, and how a message will be delivered.
Opening
The initial part of a well-organized message that introduces the topic or purpose.
Body
The section of a well-organized message that presents details, explanations, examples, or supporting information.
Closing
The final part of a well-organized message that summarizes the message or provides an appropriate conclusion or call to action.
Intrapersonal Communication
Communication that takes place within oneself, involving thinking, reflecting, evaluating experiences, making decisions, and planning for the future.
Journal
A personal space where a learner can record experiences, observations, questions, insights, and goals.
Simple Reflection Structure
A four-step reflective model consisting of Experience -> Reflection -> Learning -> Action.
SMART Goal Criteria
Framework requiring goals to be Specific (clearly stated), Measurable (progress can be observed), Achievable (realistic), Relevant (connected to a meaningful purpose), and Time-bound (has a target period).
Online Presence
The information and content associated with a person on digital platforms, including profile information, posts, comments, photos, videos, creative works, and interests.
THINK Checklist
A 5-question pre-posting checklist asking if content is True, Helpful, Important to share, Necessary, and Kind and respectful.
St. Alexius College Tardiness Policy
A school policy stating that three tardinesses are equivalent to 1 day of absence.
