Narration

Telling a story; recounting of events

To explain the information of your subject as a series of events

Description

Targets the senses with a high amount of detail; type of narration with more detail

To create a picture with words and to help the reader visualize the experience

Process Analysis

To explain how something works or how something was done

To explain a process by giving information and directions to show how something is done

Exemplification/ Illustration

Making a point through a series of examples or an extended example

To discuss a topic by using a series of examples to clarify or go more in depth about the point

Comparison and Contrast

Juxtaposing; Putting two things together to make their simlarites and differences more distinct

To show how two areas of your topic are the same or different or both

Classification and Division

To sort the things that go together and why they do

To break a topic into groups of categories and explains what goes together and why

Definition

Defining something and explaining how a situation fits that description

To define something and make sure the reader has a common understanding of the thing; at the end, thing defined and stated if situation does or doesn’t fit

Cause and Effect

Analyzing the causes that lead to a certain effect

To explain what caused something to happen and why it caused it to happen; how one thing leads to another
