Nationalism
A byproduct of the Industrial Revolution, manifested through shows of power like the Crystal Palace and economically through unions like the Zollverein. It had dangerous implications for multi-ethnic countries and led to increased anti-Semitism.
Zollverein
A customs union among German states that decreased tariffs and was a step toward political unification.
Realpolitik
A policy where all state decisions were based on what would benefit the state regardless of who it affects or whether or not it is moral or right.
The Dreyfus Affair
An example of increased anti-semitism in 19th century France.
The Crimean War
Resulted from rising nationalist sentiments in Russia. The war was between the Ottomans and Russia, but the Ottomans also gained the support of the French and the British who feared the rising nationalism in Russia and wanted to prevent Russia from becoming too powerful.
Cavour
Industrialized the Italian states of Piedmont and Sardinia and enlisted the support of France to help fight Austria, which held certain Italian states at the time.
Garibaldi
United the southern Italian states by taking advantage of a rebellion in the two Sicilies
Bismarck
Used the strategy of creating common enemies to unify the German people.
Prussian-Danish War
Created a dispute with Russia in order to set up Austria to be the “bad guy” so that he could pick a war with Austria.
Opium Wars
A result of the British desire for tea and silk from China.
Social Darwinism
The belief that Imperialism was fine because it was the survival of the fittest society.
Berlin Conference
Allowed European countries to divide up Africa without any thought to who was living there at the time.
Sepoy Rebellion
Caused by the belief that the British were not respectful of Hindu and Muslim customs.
Positivism
The belief that everything needed to have scientific proof. It posed a threat to the religious hold that Christianity had on Europe
Romanticism
An artistic movement reflected Spanish Nationalism.
