How Diffusion Works:
- Diffusion is the process where particles spread out from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration. This process occurs in gases and liquids.
What happens to the particles in the process of diffusion?
Particles move from an area where they are more concentrated to one where they are less concentrated. This movement is random and continues until the particles are evenly distributed throughout the space.
What happens to the kinetic energy in the diffusion process?
The kinetic energy of the particles allows them to move and spread. The higher the temperature, the faster the particles move, and the quicker diffusion occurs.
What is thermal expansion?
Thermal expansion refers to the tendency of matter to expand when it is heated. As the temperature increases, the particles within a substance vibrate more and move farther apart, causing the substance to expand. Conversely, when cooled, particles contract, and the substance shrinks.
Kinetic Molecular Theory (KMT):
According to KMT, matter is made up of tiny particles in constant motion. As the temperature of the material increases, the particles' speed increases, leading to greater distances between particles and hence, expansion. On cooling, the opposite happens: particles slow down and come closer together, causing contraction.
