Leadership
The act of influencing and motivating people to act in the same direction towards achieving a common goal.
Nursing Leadership
A process necessary to guide nursing personnel to a specific goal, with the primary objective of providing quality and safe nursing care for the patient.
Management
The process of planning, organizing, directing, coordinating, and controlling resources and activities to achieve specific organizational goals efficiently and effectively.
Planning (Management Function)
Setting goals and determining how to achieve them.
Organizing (Management Function)
Arranging people and resources to accomplish tasks.
Staffing (Management Function)
Assigning and coordinating personnel.
Directing (Management Function)
Guiding and supervising staff.
Controlling (Management Function)
Monitoring performance and evaluating results.
Trait Theory
A leadership theory suggesting that effective leaders possess certain traits or characteristics that make them successful leaders.
Behavioral Theory
A theory focusing on what leaders do and how they behave, rather than their personal traits, suggesting leadership can be learned and developed.
Situational Leadership Theory
Developed by Paul Hersey and Ken Blanchard, this theory emphasizes the leader's adaptability to the readiness and development level of their followers.
Contingency Theory of Leadership
A theory proposing that leadership effectiveness depends on the interaction between the leader's style and the situation.
Transformational Leadership Theory
A leadership theory where leaders inspire and motivate people to achieve higher levels of performance and encourage positive change.
Great Man Theory
A theory proposing that great leaders are born with natural qualities and abilities, viewing leadership as an innate characteristic rather than something developed.
Servant Leadership

Authentic Leadership

The Nursing Process

Patient Classification System
A method used to categorize patients according to the intensity of nursing care they require to determine staffing numbers and skill mix.
Case Method (Total Patient Care)
A nursing care modality where one nurse provides complete care for one or several patients during a shift, performing all activities from assessment to evaluation.
Functional Nursing
A care modality where nursing tasks are divided among staff members according to specific functions (e.g., one nurse gives medications, another does treatments).
Team Nursing
A modality led by a Registered Nurse who coordinates care provided to a group of patients by a team of LPNs/LVNs, nursing assistants, and support staff.
Primary Nursing
A modality where one primary nurse is responsible for planning and coordinating a patient's care throughout hospitalization, supported by associate nurses when absent.
Modular Nursing

Evidence-Based Practice (EBP)

An ethical principle respecting an individual's right to self-determination.
Nonmaleficence
An ethical principle directing healthcare providers to cause or do no harm to another.
Beneficence
An ethical principle directing healthcare providers to do good to others.

GSIS (Government Service Insurance System)
A social insurance institution for government employees in the Philippines providing retirement benefits, life insurance, and other social security benefits.

SSS (Social Security System)
A social insurance program for private sector employees, self-employed individuals, and voluntary members in the Philippines.

PhilHealth
The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation, which acts as the national health insurance program ensuring access to affordable healthcare for Filipinos.
