The GI tract is composed of
4 tunics(layers)
Tunics of the Digestive System(deep to superficial)
Mucosa, Submucosa, Muscularis, Serosa
2 Regions of the oral cavity
vestibule and oral cavity proper
Vestibule
Space in front of entrance( between lips and teeth )
Hard Palate
Anterior 2/3, palatine processes of maxillae bones and palatine bones
Soft Palate
Posterior 2/3. muscular structure
Uvula
extends posteriorly from soft palate, elevates during swallowing to close off posterior entrance to nasopharynx
Tongue
Primary skeletal muscle
Lingual Frenulum
Attach underside of tongue to palate
Tongue function
move food around oral cavity, mix food with saliva and assist in swallowing
Salivary Glands
produce and secrete saliva. Moistening ingested materials to become slick bolus. Moistens, cleans and lubricates oral cavity structures . Dissolves food so taste receptors can be stimulated
Parotid Salivary glands
secrete 25-30% of total saliva, largest, parotid ducts run parallel to zygomatic arch pierces buccinator muscle before opening into mouth
Submandibular Salivary Gland
produces most saliva, inferior to the mandible
