Land rehabilitation
The process of improving degraded land so that it can support agreed functions or intended future land uses.
Land footprint
The total area of land required to support a specific consumption pattern or supply chain, which may include land used outside the geographic area of consumption.
Land degradation
A decline in land condition, function, productivity, or ecological integrity, including the capacity of the land to provide valued ecosystem services.
Water erosion
The detachment and transport of soil particles by raindrop impact, sheet flow, rills, gullies, or concentrated runoff.
Wind erosion
The removal and transport of dry, loose, and poorly protected soil particles by the action of wind.
Tolerable soil-loss
An assessment of erosion that considers soil depth, fertility, formation rates, and the capacity of the landscape to recover without losing functionality.
Target condition
The desired measurable state of a site, linked specifically to the intended future use or ecological function.
Baseline condition
The measured starting condition of a site against which the target and subsequent changes are assessed.
Performance gap
The difference between the target condition and the baseline condition, often expressed as the formula Target−Baseline, representing the change management must achieve.
Dryland salinity
A degradation process in Western Australia where clearing deep-rooted perennial vegetation reduces evapotranspiration, causing the water table to rise and move stored salts to the soil surface.
Soil acidification
A net increase in soil acid load typically caused by the removal of alkaline products, nitrate leaching, or specific fertiliser reactions.
Land degradation neutrality (LDN)
A state where the amount and quality of land resources remain stable or increase within specified temporal and spatial scales (SDG target 15.3).
LDN response hierarchy
A management sequence prioritizing the avoidance of degradation first, followed by reduction of unavoidable degradation, and finally reversing past damage through restoration.
Soil carbon sequestration
The soil function of storing carbon within organic matter and minerals, which influences climate regulation and soil fertility.
Bulk density
The dry mass of soil per unit bulk volume, including pore space; it is a primary indicator of soil compaction and aeration quality.
Best available science (BAS)
The most credible, relevant, and usable evidence available for a particular management decision at a specific point in time.
Adaptive management
A structured, iterative process of decision-making that aims to reduce uncertainty over time via system monitoring and the loop: Act → Monitor → Learn → Revise.
Active adaptive management
A management style where actions are deliberately designed as experiments to test competing hypotheses and maximize learning about system responses.
Passive adaptive management
Implementing a single preferred management model based on best-supported practice and revising it only if monitoring shows outcomes differ from expectations.
Preliminary Site Investigation (PSI)
The first phase of the contaminated sites process, using desktop reviews and site inspections to identify potential contaminant sources and develop an initial CSM.
Detailed Site Investigation (DSI)
A phase of site assessment used to collect site-specific data (sampling soil, groundwater, etc.) to test and refine the conceptual site model.
Conceptual Site Model (CSM)
A simplified representation of a site that identifies the sources of contamination, the pathways of movement, and the receptors that may be affected.
Monitored natural attenuation (MNA)
A remediation strategy that relies on verified natural physical, chemical, or biological processes to reduce contaminant mass, mobility, or toxicity under supervision.
Environmental justice
The fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people, focusing on the distribution of risks/benefits, participation in decisions, and recognition of affected communities.
Flux
In environmental cycles, the rate of transfer of material between different pools or reservoirs per unit of time.
Nitrogen mineralization
The process by which organic nitrogen is converted into inorganic forms (such as ammonium) as organic matter decomposes.
Nitrogen nitrification
The biological oxidation of ammonium (NH4+) into nitrate (NO3−), creating a highly mobile form of nitrogen.
Nitrogen denitrification
The reduction of nitrate (NO3−) to gaseous forms (like N2 or N2O) by microbes under low-oxygen conditions.
Hazard
The inherent capacity of a substance, agent, or process to cause harm to a receptor.
Risk
The probability that a receptor will be harmed, calculated by combining the hazard with the level of exposure and the likelihood/consequences of the event.
