truman doctrine

Policy established by president Harry S. Truman. It stated that the U.S. would provide economic, military and political support to countries being threatened by communism.

marshall plan

U.S. program that provided financial support to rebuild countries that had been affected by WW2 and prevent the spread of communism in Europe.

mccarthyism

a campaign led by senator Joseph McCarthy against the alleged communists in the country.

baby boom

an increase in birthrates after WW2 that led to a population increase. More housing had to be built during this time which helped better the economy.

the blacklist

a list of alleged communist actors, writers and directors in Hollywood who were denied to work in the film industry

civil rights act of 1964

legislation that outlawed segregation and any discrimination based on sex, gender and race in public places

voting rights act of 1965

prohibited states from imposing ant type of rules or qualifications to vote that would deny or restrict African American’s rights to vote.

equal rights amendment

a proposed amendment to the U.S. constitution that aimed to ensure equal rights for all citizens regardless of their gender

13th amendment

the amendment that abolished slavery in the U.S. for good

state and local laws that marked the beginning of racial segregation in Southern states

allied forces invaded German-occupied France that marked a significant turining point

allied powers meeting where they discussed the fate of Germany and reorganization of post-war Europe

chicano movement

a movement led by Cesar Chavez with a primary goal of advocating for the rights of Mexican Americans

a group of nine African American students who enrolled in Little Rock Central High School and faced significant opposition and discrimination

a 13 day confrontation between the soviet union and the U.S. after the U.S. discovered secret missed being built in Cuba by the soviets

a political scandal that involved a break-in at the Democratic National Commitee headquarters and the cover up by the Nixon administration

vietnam war

a conflict in Vietnam between Vietcong, supported by communists, and South Vietnam supported by the U.S. and others anti-communist nations. LBJ escalated the U.S. involvement worsening conditions and leading to protests against the war in the U.S.

domestic programs established by LBJ that helped citizens through social welfare, education reform and civil rights initiatives. they were programs inspired by Roosevelt’s New Deal

a five year agreement between the U.S. and soviet union to limit the number of nuclear weapons. it marked a significant step to easing the tensions of the cold war.
