Soft Skills & Relocation

These questions gauge your attitude, commitment to moving, and how you transition from an engineering background into field work.

2
New cards

Tell me about yourself and your background.

I recently graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering at Florida Gulf Coast University. For my capstone project, I got to work with Homeland Security Investigations and developed a mobile app called LeoFindIt to help law enforcement officers with identifying and detecting hidden tracking devices. I also got to build an open-source smart home app that interacts with your home router and builds an interface that captures live network traffic, isolates anomalies, and monitors bandwidth metadata. I'm not really into programming. The classes I had the most fun in were more hands-on and allowed me to work with hardware. Everything I've worked on was meant to help people and I am really interested in the role where I can physically build out network infrastructures.

3
New cards

Why do you want to transition from Software Engineering into a hands-on Field Technician role?

While I love technology, I realized during my degree that I don't want to sit behind a desk coding all day. I am highly active, enjoy physical, hands-on problem solving, and want to see the real-world impact of my work. Transitioning to a Field Technician role allows me to combine my technical understanding of how data flows with the physical execution of installing and troubleshooting the actual infrastructure.

4
New cards

I see you are moving to Charlotte in 2 weeks. Do you have your logistics finalized?

Yes, my moving logistics are completely finalized. I have my housing lined up and am actively relocating to the Charlotte area in exactly two weeks. Because everything is already organized on my end, I am completely ready to hit the ground running and start your training program immediately upon arrival without any delays.

5
New cards

Why do you want to work for Prince Telecom specifically?

I am looking for a company that offers a structured, hands-on training program where my work ethic directly impacts my career growth. Prince Telecom stands out because of your clear pathway for development and your focus on a safety-first culture. I want to build a long-term career in telecom, and your production incentive structure motivates me because it rewards technicians who work hard and deliver high-quality results.

6
New cards

Where do you see your career heading 5 years from now?

In five years, I want to be a highly efficient, top-tier Senior Technician or Field Lead within the company. I want to completely master the physical fiber infrastructure, maximize my production metrics, and eventually help train and mentor the next generation of incoming junior technicians at Prince Telecom.

7
New cards

How do you handle repetitive, highly repetitive daily workflows?

I actually thrive in structured environments. My engineering background taught me to look at repetitive tasks as an absolute process. I focus on building a consistent, efficient routine at every house visit, which helps me maintain high safety standards, prevent mistakes, and increase my daily installation speed.

8
New cards

What are your core strengths when learning an entirely new trade?

My greatest strengths are my technical curiosity and my speed of learning. Because I already understand network logic, IP configurations, and router architectures from my degree, I can absorb your hands-on training much faster than a standard applicant. I am highly coachable and know how to ask the right questions to master a skill quickly.

9
New cards

What is your biggest weakness, and how do you work around it?

Because my background is in software engineering, I haven't spent years working with heavy field-specific tools like mechanical fiber cleavers or industrial transit vans. I work around this by being incredibly detail-oriented, listening intently to my trainers, and putting in extra practice during staging labs to ensure my physical mechanics match my technical knowledge.

10
New cards

Describe a time at work or school when things did not go your way and how you handled it. (p1)

While building the smart home app, our frontend was calling multiple backend API routes simultaneously, which overloaded the home router and caused connections to drop or fail. To resolve this bottle-neck, we built a mechanism to force concurrent requests to wait in an orderly queue until an active socket freed up, successfully stabilizing the system.

11
New cards

Describe a time at work or school when things did not go your way and how you handled it. (p2)

Another example, it's senior year, everything is wrapping up, projects are due, exams are coming up, and everyone is dropping like flies. I often had to pick up the slack from my partners and it would take me days to get through the workload. I had 5 courses, 1 of them I had solo projects and the other 3 I had partners who did not want to do any of the work. One even dropped out from the project completely to do something completely different. The only thing I could do was grit my teeth and lock myself up in my dorm to spend hours on my laptop programming the life out of me. If I knew that senior year would be the most challenging from the amount of students who were mentally clocked out, I would've given myself an extra semester. My major was completely dependent on groupwork, but it was full of students who didn't want to collaborate. It was a complete nightmare.

12
New cards

How do you maintain focus when working completely alone in remote field locations?

I am highly self-motivated and take immense personal pride in the quality of my work. When working alone, I treat every ticket as a direct reflection of my professionalism. I stay focused by setting small time goals for each stage of the installation and maintaining a steady, disciplined pace throughout the day.

13
New cards

How do you manage work-related stress or tight daily ticketing schedules?

I manage tight schedules through strict organization and preparation. I make sure my vehicle is fully stocked and clean before my shift starts so I don't waste time looking for tools. If an install runs late due to a technical glitch, I focus entirely on fixing the issue correctly the first time, because rushing only leads to mistakes and repeat visits.

14
New cards

Tell me about a time you had to pivot your daily plan due to an unexpected change.

During my capstone project, the standard procedure would be to build the backend of the app before building the frontend. However, our project sponsor requested an early version of the app to be made before we could finish building everything that would make the app work in the first place. It was difficult to follow the correct process by building things that are not yet accessible because it would be like building a house without the foundation. So we quickly released a beta app that's clickable and available to open. It was basically just a simple blueprint that allowed the sponsor to point out things they want to add, change, or update. It was enough to satisfy a nontechnical client and gave us time to build the actual foundation.

15
New cards

What motivates you to perform high-quality work when no one is actively supervising you?

Integrity and my own career goals motivate me. In this industry, sloppy work always catches up to you through customer complaints or failed lines. I want to maximize my production incentives and build a reputation as a reliable technician, so doing the job perfectly the first time—whether a supervisor is watching or not—is the only way to achieve that.

16
New cards

How do you handle receiving critical constructive feedback from a supervisor?

I welcome it completely. As a beginner in the field, I know that experienced technicians and supervisors have valuable insights that can save me time and keep me safe. I listen without getting defensive, take notes on what I need to correct, and immediately apply that feedback to my very next installation.

17
New cards

What are your absolute salary expectations for starting out with us?

Based on the market rate for Charlotte and the technical value my Software Engineering degree brings to the table, I am looking to start at $18.00 an hour. I am highly motivated to complete the training program quickly, and I am excited about the opportunity to exceed that baseline through your production incentives as I scale up my daily installation volume.

18
New cards

Entry-Level Technical Aptitude & Logic

They do not expect expert knowledge, but they want to see that you understand core technical and internet logic.

19
New cards

In simple terms, how does a fiber optic cable transmit internet data compared to an old copper cable?

Copper cables send data using electrical impulses, which can slow down over long distances or get interfered with by power lines. Fiber optic cables send data using pulses of light down incredibly thin strands of glass. Because light travels so fast, fiber delivers much faster internet speeds, handles more data at once, and doesn't experience distance slowdowns or electrical interference.

20
New cards

How would you explain to a customer why bending a fiber cable too sharply can break their internet?

I would explain it by saying: 'Think of a fiber cable like a straw with a flashlight shining through it. If the straw is straight or has a gentle curve, the light passes right through. But if you bend or kink that straw sharply, the light gets blocked or the glass inside snaps. To keep your internet running perfectly, we have to make sure the cable has smooth, safe bends.'

21
New cards

What steps do you take when troubleshooting a network connectivity problem?

I use a systematic bottom-up approach. First, I check the physical layer: are all cables plugged in tightly, and is the equipment getting power? Second, I check the signal coming into the house from the outside drop. Third, I check the local device settings like IP configurations. By isolating each piece of the network step-by-step, I can find the exact failure point without wasting time guessing.

22
New cards

If a router is getting a clear signal but the devices cannot browse the web, where do you start checking?

If the router has a solid incoming signal but devices can't browse, the issue is likely a local routing or configuration problem. I would check if the router is successfully assigning IP addresses to the devices using DHCP. I would also verify the DNS settings to ensure the network can translate web addresses into IPs, or simply power-cycle the equipment to clear out any frozen internal software loops.

23
New cards

What is the fundamental difference between a modem and a wireless router?

The modem (or ONT in a fiber network) is the gateway that brings the internet signal from our outside network into the home and translates it into a digital format. The wireless router takes that digital internet signal from the modem and broadcasts it through the air or via Ethernet cables so multiple devices inside the house can connect to it at the same time.

24
New cards

What factors inside a customer's house can degrade their local Wi-Fi 6/7 signals?

Physical barriers like thick concrete walls, brick chimneys, metal mirrors, and heavy appliances can severely block Wi-Fi signals. Household electronics like microwaves, baby monitors, and older Bluetooth devices can also cause wireless frequency interference. I always try to place the router in a central, elevated location away from major obstructions to ensure maximum coverage.

25
New cards

If you are given a manual or blueprint for an installation setup, what is your approach to reading it?

My software engineering coursework taught me to read technical documents carefully and methodically. Before touching any hardware, I start by reviewing the layout to understand the final goal, check the legend for specific symbols or cable types, and then follow the diagram step-by-step. I double-check my physical layout against the print before making any permanent modifications like drilling or cutting.

26
New cards

Describe a school project where you had to analyze data to find a technical mistake.

While developing my capstone project, there would be erratic signal data and duplicate entries showing multiple of the same tracking device. I had to manually capture the raw hexadecimal payloads to analyze any patterns I may be missing and I found that trackers such as apple airtags dynamically rotate their MAC addresses to mask their identity. I had to rewrite the filtering logic to stabilize the location calculations and update with the changing addresses.

27
New cards

Are you familiar with standard home network security protocols?

Yes, I am highly familiar with them. I understand standard encryption protocols like WPA2 and the newer WPA3, which secure home Wi-Fi traffic from unauthorized access. I also understand basic security practices like changing the default admin passwords on routers, setting up secure guest networks, and ensuring firewall settings are active to protect user data.

28
New cards

How do you double-check your work to guarantee there are no input errors?

I always perform a final quality verification pass before closing a ticket. For physical wiring, I use testing equipment to verify the light levels or signal strength. For software configuration, I run a live ping test and open actual web pages on a device to prove the connection works. I also review my entry logs in the company ticketing app to ensure all serial numbers match up.

29
New cards

What tools or diagnostic devices have you used in your engineering coursework?

I have extensive experience using digital diagnostic software like Wireshark for network packet analysis and command-line tools like ping, traceroute, and ipconfig for network troubleshooting. While I am new to specialized field tools like optical power meters or fiber cleavers, my familiarity with digital test data means I will learn to read and interpret field tool metrics very rapidly.

30
New cards

What does FTTH (Fiber to the Home) mean to a consumer?

FTTH means that the fiber optic line runs directly into their house, rather than stopping at a neighborhood green box and switching to slow copper wires. For the consumer, this guarantees they get the absolute fastest, most stable speeds possible with equal upload and download speeds, which is perfect for working from home, streaming, and gaming without lag.

31
New cards

If a system is completely unresponsive, what is your very first logical step?

The very first step is always to verify the power source. I check if the device is turned on, if the power cord is securely plugged into both the wall outlet and the device, and if the outlet itself has power. You would be surprised how many 'broken' systems are simply unplugged or connected to a tripped GFCI outlet or a switched wall plug.

32
New cards

How comfortable are you utilizing smartphone apps to log and close out technical tickets?

With a degree in Software Engineering, using smartphone applications is second nature to me. I am incredibly comfortable navigating digital ticketing platforms, attaching photos of completed work, inputting inventory serial numbers, and writing clear, concise technical notes to close out a job accurately.

33
New cards

Explain what an IP address does in a home network environment.

An IP address acts exactly like a mailing address for a device. Just like a mailman needs a specific street address to deliver a letter to your house, a network router needs a specific IP address to deliver the correct internet data packets directly to your specific phone, laptop, or smart TV without getting them mixed up.

34
New cards

How would you test if an internet drop wire is completely dead versus just running slowly?

I would disconnect the line from the home's hardware and connect my diagnostic test equipment directly to the incoming drop line. If my meter reads 'no light' or zero signal, the line is completely dead, indicating a physical break outside. If it reads a signal but the light levels are dangerously low, the line is degraded or dirty, causing the slow speeds.

35
New cards

What is your process for keeping track of high volumes of tech inventory and equipment?

I treat my work vehicle like a physical database. I maintain a strict organization system where every part—from expensive routers down to small splitters and connectors—has a designated storage bin. I log every item I use on my digital ticket immediately, and I do a quick inventory count at the end of every day so I always know what needs to be restocked.

36
New cards

Why is it vital to keep the glass tips of fiber connections 100% clean and free of dust?

Because fiber optics use light to send data, even a single microscopic speck of dust or a fingerprint smudge on the glass tip can completely block or scatter the light beam. This leads to massive signal loss, slow internet speeds, or a total connection failure. Keeping the tips perfectly clean is the single most important rule of fiber installation.

37
New cards

Have you ever configured a local network gateway?

Yes. For the smart home app, we set up a dynamic configuration setup page designed to process custom local gateway endpoints. The backend took in parameters such as IP address targets, port numbers, usernames, and passwords. The application verified the validity of the gateway by dynamically initiating an SSH connection to confirm the route. This gave us complete control over network data monitoring and status updates across our active interfaces.

38
New cards

How do you deal with complex technical issues that you do not immediately know how to fix?

I never guess or start changing things randomly. First, I document the exact error codes or symptoms. Second, I consult the company's technical knowledge base or equipment manuals. If I am still stuck after a logical attempt, I safely pause and reach out to a senior technician or team lead to explain what I've already tested, ensuring I learn the correct solution for the future.

39
New cards

Physical Demands, Safety, & Weather

Prince Telecom's role requires heavy physical labor. These questions evaluate your physical capabilities.

40
New cards

This role requires lifting up to 55 lbs repeatedly without assistance. Do you have any restrictions?

No, I have absolutely no lifting restrictions. I am in great physical condition, maintain an active lifestyle, and am completely comfortable lifting, carrying, and moving heavy equipment up to 55 pounds independently throughout a standard shift.

41
New cards

How comfortable are you climbing up and working on 28-foot extension ladders?

I am completely comfortable working at heights. I have no fear of ladders, and my approach to working on an extension ladder relies entirely on discipline. I treat ladder safety as a strict protocol—always verifying the placement angle, securing the footing, and maintaining three points of contact at all times.

42
New cards

Are you comfortable maneuvering inside cramped environments like attics or residential crawl spaces?

Yes, I am comfortable working in those spaces. I understand that routing fiber lines neatly requires getting into tight, dark, or cramped areas under floors and inside roofs. I look at it as a necessary part of delivering a high-quality, professional installation for the customer.

43
New cards

This job is 100% outdoors in extreme summer heat and winter cold. How will you manage that?

I manage it by staying prepared and maintaining my physical stamina. I treat working in extreme weather like an athletic routine—pacing myself, staying ahead of my hydration by drinking water before I get thirsty, wearing the correct seasonal gear, and utilizing cooling or warming safety breaks appropriately.

44
New cards

Tell me about a time you had to perform heavy physical labor or endurance tasks.

While my recent focus has been my engineering degree, I maintain my physical endurance through regular, intense strength and stamina training outside of class. I am used to being on my feet, pushing my physical limits, and staying active for hours at a time without losing focus or energy.

45
New cards

What does a "safety-first culture" mean to you on a day-to-day job site?

A safety-first culture means that no installation metric or shortcut is ever worth risking an injury. It means taking responsibility for my own safety and the safety of those around me by actively checking my equipment, wearing my PPE, and staying hyper-aware of my surroundings on every single job.

46
New cards

Give an example of a time you strictly followed a safety rule even when it slowed down your work.

In my hardware labs, we had strict protocols regarding grounding and electrical isolation before touching components. Even when we were rushing against a tight grading deadline, I refused to skip the check steps. Taking an extra 60 seconds to do it safely is always faster than dealing with a blown component or an accident.

47
New cards

How do you ensure your work area remains secure so bystanders or pets do not get hurt?

Before I begin any work, I survey the entire site. I ensure my ladder placement doesn't block walkways, keep my tools neatly organized in my immediate work zone rather than scattered, and politely ask the homeowner to keep pets and children indoors until my physical installation and drilling are complete.

48
New cards

If you notice a piece of company equipment or a tool is slightly damaged, what do you do?

I immediately tag the tool out of service so no one else uses it by mistake, and I report it to my supervisor to arrange for a replacement. Using damaged tools—especially ladders or electrical testing gear—is a massive safety hazard that can lead to preventable field accidents.

49
New cards

How do you manage your physical stamina during a grueling 10-hour field shift?

I manage it through consistency and nutrition. I make sure I eat a proper breakfast, pack sustained-energy snacks, and drink water continuously. Instead of rushing frantically and burning out by midday, I maintain a steady, efficient work pace that keeps my energy level consistent from the first ticket to the last.

50
New cards

Have you ever operated heavy machinery, power tools, or commercial equipment?

Yes, I am highly comfortable using standard power tools like commercial hammer drills, impact drivers, wire strippers, and basic hand tools. My engineering projects required a high degree of precision, so I know how to handle tools safely and accurately to avoid damaging property.

51
New cards

What steps would you take to prevent heat exhaustion while working outdoors in a North Carolina summer?

I monitor my body closely and stay heavily hydrated with water and electrolytes. I also wear lightweight, UV-protective clothing and a cooling hat. If I feel any early signs of heat strain, I take a short, mandatory safety break in the shade or AC to cool down before resuming work safely.

52
New cards

Are you comfortable working alone at heights near utility poles?

Yes, I am comfortable with it. Working alone at heights simply requires a higher level of personal accountability. I make sure to double-check my ladder stability, visually inspect the utility pole area for hazards like nearby power lines, and wear my safety harness properly before leaving the ground.

53
New cards

What Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) do you expect to wear daily for this job?

I expect to wear standard, compliant PPE at all times: a high-visibility safety vest, a hard hat, safety glasses to protect my eyes from glass fiber shards, steel-toe boots, and heavy-duty work gloves when handling cables or climbing ladders.

54
New cards

If a customer asks you to do something unsafe to complete an install, how do you respond?

I politely but firmly decline. I would tell them: 'For my safety and the protection of your property, I have to follow our strict company safety guidelines. Let's look at an alternative routing option together that gets your internet connected perfectly and safely.

55
New cards

How do you handle heights or minor instances of vertigo on a ladder?

I do not suffer from vertigo or a fear of heights, but I respect the distance from the ground. I manage my safety on a ladder by keeping my eyes focused on the work in front of me, keeping my weight centered, and never overreaching or leaning past the safety boundaries of the ladder rails.

56
New cards

What would you do if you saw a coworker ignoring a safety protocol in the field?

I would look out for them and speak up immediately in a professional way. I'd say something like, 'Hey, let's look out for each other—make sure you grab your safety glasses before you cut that fiber line.' We all want to go home safe at the end of the day, so keeping each other accountable is vital.

57
New cards

How do you ensure your vehicle is packed securely so heavy equipment doesn't shift while driving?

I utilize heavy-duty bins, straps, and designated racks inside the van. Every morning, I do a quick shake-test of the ladders and heavy toolboxes to guarantee everything is locked down. A loose 50-lb piece of equipment shifting during a sudden stop is an unnecessary driving hazard.

58
New cards

Are you comfortable using hand tools like drills, wire strippers, and crimpers for hours at a time?

Yes, I am completely comfortable with that. I have excellent hand dexterity and grip strength. I understand that precision cutting, stripping, and crimping fiber lines for hours is a core part of the daily workflow, and I enjoy tasks that require that level of physical detail.

59
New cards

Do you have distinct color acuity to identify different colored wires and fiber jackets?

Yes, I have perfect color vision. I have absolutely no color blindness, which I know is critical in this industry for accurately identifying, splicing, and organizing color-coded fiber optic tubes and copper wire bundles.

60
New cards

Customer Service & Communication

You will represent Prince Telecom inside people's homes. They want to ensure you are professional.

61
New cards

How do you handle a customer who is furious that their internet has been down for 3 days?

I start by listening completely without interrupting or getting defensive. I validate their frustration by saying: 'I completely understand why you're upset; losing your connection for three days makes it impossible to get things done. I am here today specifically to solve this for you, so let's get to work and find out exactly what went wrong.

62
New cards

How do you explain a highly complex, technical internet issue to an elderly, non-technical customer?

I completely avoid technical jargon. Instead, I would use simple everyday analogies. For example: Instead of saying hexadecimal manufacturer data keys, I'd say, 'green for a safe device, red for suspect tracker families.'

63
New cards

Tell me about an instance where you went above and beyond to make someone happy.

During a major team project in college, a client was extremely confused about how to use the interface we built. Instead of just emailing them a text manual, I hopped on a live video call, shared my screen, and patiently walked them through it step-by-step. They went from stressed to incredibly grateful, which taught me that taking an extra 10 minutes to educate someone changes their entire experience.

64
New cards

What do you do if a customer disagrees with where you need to drill a hole to run a cable?

I don't argue with them. I explain the technical reason for the path, but respect their home. I'd say: 'I understand you don't want a hole drilled through this baseboard. Let's look at the layout together. If we route it through this closet instead, it will take a little longer, but it will keep the cable completely hidden. Does that option work better for you?'

65
New cards

How do you introduce yourself professionally when knocking on a customer's front door?

I put on a professional smile, make direct eye contact, step back a couple of feet from the door so they feel comfortable, and say: 'Good morning! My name is [Your Name] with Prince Telecom. I'm here for your fiber internet installation today. May I confirm your name, and is it a good time for us to get started?'

66
New cards

If a customer asks you questions about their billing or service plan, how do you handle it?

I handle it politely but maintain a firm professional boundary since I am a technician. I tell them: 'I want to make sure you get 100% accurate information on your billing. While I handle the physical line installation, I can look up the customer service number for you right now so you can connect directly with our account specialists while I get to work.'

67
New cards

How do you handle a household that has aggressive or loose pets running around your workspace?

For my safety and the animal's safety, I address it before pulling out tools. I tell the homeowner: 'I want to make sure your pet stays completely safe while I'm drilling and running cables. Would you mind securing them in a separate room just until I finish up the physical installation?'

68
New cards

What is your process for walking a customer through how to use their new equipment?

I use a quick 'show and confirm' process. I point out the modem and router, show them what the lights mean if they ever need to reboot it, and help them connect their primary phone or laptop to the new Wi-Fi network. I have them type the password in themselves so I know they understand how to do it when I leave.

69
New cards

What would you do if an installation is taking 2 hours longer than expected and the customer is getting restless?

I keep them proactively updated so they aren't left guessing. I'll say: 'I know this is taking longer than we planned, and I appreciate your patience. I ran into a degraded signal line outside, and I am choosing to rewire it completely right now so you don't experience internet drops next week. I am on the final steps and should be done in about 20 minutes.'

70
New cards

How do you maintain an empathetic, polite attitude at your 5th house visit of a long day?

I remind myself that even though it is my fifth house of the day, it is that customer's only appointment. They have been waiting for me all day to get their internet running. Keeping that perspective ensures I treat them with the exact same energy, respect, and high-quality service that my very first customer received.

71
New cards

If a customer accuses you of scratching their floor or wall, what is your immediate response?

"I stay completely calm and professional. I say: 'I am so sorry to hear that, let's take a look at it together right now.' I inspect the area, document it clearly with photos, and immediately contact my supervisor to report the incident according to Prince Telecom's official property damage procedures.

72
New cards

Why is clear, descriptive documentation of customer interactions crucial for our billing team?

Because the field technician is the company's only physical eyes on the property. If a customer changes their mind about a service or requests an add-on, writing accurate notes and logging photos ensures the billing and customer service teams have a clear paper trail, preventing future billing disputes or confusion.

73
New cards

How do you handle a situation where a customer refuses to sign the final service completion paperwork?

I don't get confrontational. I politely ask what part of the service they feel is incomplete: 'I want to make sure you are completely satisfied before I leave. Is there a specific issue with the internet speed or the wiring that we need to address?' If they still refuse, I call my supervisor immediately from the site to handle the escalation.

74
New cards

What would you do if you arrived at a home and felt unsafe entering the property?

My safety is always the priority. If I notice a dangerous environment, I will remain in my company vehicle, do not knock on the door, and immediately call my supervisor to explain the situation. I will document the hazards from the vehicle to protect myself and the company before moving to the next ticket.

75
New cards

How do you build trust with a customer within the first 60 seconds of meeting them?

By looking professional, acting organized, and outlining the plan. After introducing myself, I say: 'I'm going to do a quick 5-minute walkthrough of your home to see where the lines come in, and then I'll explain exactly where the equipment will go before I touch anything.' Giving them a clear roadmap instantly builds confidence.

76
New cards

What does "production incentives" mean to you regarding customer satisfaction vs. speed?

Production incentives mean working with focused efficiency, not cutting corners. True efficiency means doing the job perfectly the first time so you never have to waste time driving back to a house to fix a mistake. High quality and high speed go hand-in-hand if you follow the process accurately.

77
New cards

How do you handle a customer who tries to hover over you and micro-manage your installation?

I embrace it and keep them included. I explain what I am doing as I do it, which usually satisfies their curiosity and makes them feel at ease. For example, I'll say: 'Right now I'm prepping the fiber drop line, and next I'll be moving inside to install the wall jack.' Once they see I am confident and safe, they usually step back.

78
New cards

Describe a time you had to use clear communication skills to resolve a misunderstanding.

1.9 Soft Skills & Relocation

Describe a time at work or school when things did not go your way and how you handled it.

79
New cards

If a customer asks for a service that isn't on your work ticket, how do you politely tell them no?

I say: 'I would love to set that up for you, but my current work ticket is strictly authorized for this specific internet connection. To make sure you are billed correctly and that we have the right equipment on hand, you just need to call customer service to add that to your account, and a technician will get it configured.'

80
New cards

What is your definition of "extraordinary customer service" in the field?

Extraordinary service means leaving the customer's home working perfectly, looking cleaner than when I arrived, and ensuring the user feels completely confident using their new technology. It's about being an expert they can trust, so they have a stellar impression of Prince Telecom long after I drive away.

81
New cards

Schedule, Attendance, & Driving (76-90)

This section checks your basic driving accountability and availability for mandatory overtime.

82
New cards

This job requires mandatory overtime and weekend shifts. Is that going to be an issue for you?

No, that is not an issue at all. I am fully aware that telecom demands fluctuate and that keeping communities connected means working when the work is there. I am completely available for mandatory overtime, evening dispatches, and weekend shifts to help the team meet our goals.

83
New cards

Tell me about your driving record. Have you had any major accidents or moving violations?

I have a clean, valid driver's license with a completely acceptable driving record. I understand that driving a company-branded vehicle means representing Prince Telecom on public roads, so I always practice defensive driving, follow speed limits, and prioritize road safety.

You will be assigned a company-issued vehicle. How do you plan to maintain its cleanliness and stock?

I will treat the company vehicle like a mobile workshop. I will conduct a baseline visual check of tools, hardware kits, and safety gear at the start and end of every shift, organizing my tools, restock parts, and overall keep it neat and tidy. A clean, organized van keeps me efficient, safe, and ready to hit the ground running the next morning.

How do you handle navigating dense Charlotte traffic to ensure you hit your scheduled appointment windows?

I stay ahead of it by checking my navigation app before my shift and between every single ticket to spot accidents or delays early. If I see major traffic building up, I rely on my route planning to take smart alternative roads, ensuring I protect my arrival windows without rushing or speeding.

What is your approach to attendance and punctuality? What constitutes being "on time" to you?

To me, being on time actually means arriving 15 minutes early. Punctuality is the foundation of professional reliability. Arriving early gives me time to check my vehicle, review my daily ticketing queue, and ensure I am mentally prepared to drive to my first job without causing a chain reaction of delays.

This job requires being on-call after hours. How do you prepare yourself for emergency dispatches?

I prepare by keeping my personal logistics completely organized during my on-call rotation. I make sure my phone is charged, my uniform and PPE are laid out, and my company vehicle is fully fueled and stocked the night before. When an emergency call comes in, I can respond immediately and safely.

Have you ever driven a large cargo van or commercial truck before?

While I am most accustomed to standard consumer vehicles, I am a highly attentive, disciplined driver who adjusts quickly. I understand that large cargo vans have massive blind spots, longer braking distances, and high clearance requirements. I will approach driving the company van with extra caution, utilizing my mirrors diligently.

How do you handle driving safely in hazardous weather conditions like heavy downpours or winter ice storms?

Hazardous weather means you must automatically adjust your driving mechanics. I slow down significantly, double my following distance behind other cars to account for slick roads, turn on my headlights for maximum visibility, and stay hyper-focused on the road ahead—completely eliminating any distractions.

What would you do if your company vehicle breaks down or gets a flat tire on the way to a customer?

First, I would pull over to a safe, level area away from traffic, turn on my hazard lights, and secure the vehicle. Second, I would immediately call my supervisor and dispatch to report the location and issue. Third, I would document the breakdown so they can update the waiting customer and reroute the ticket if necessary.

How do you plan out your routes if your GPS system temporarily loses signal?

If my GPS system temporarily loses signal, I would keep an offline backup ready before my shift starts. I never panic when technology drops out. I always keep a physical map or offline navigation maps downloaded onto my phone for the Charlotte area as a manual backup. I will pull over safely, check my offline map to confirm my location, and map out the remaining turns to the customer's property.

What is your procedure if you realize you are going to be late to your very first appointment of the day?

The moment I recognize a delay is unavoidable—whether due to an unexpected road closure or an equipment glitch—I call my supervisor or dispatch immediately. Communication is key. Giving dispatch an early heads-up allows them to proactively call the customer to manage expectations, keeping the company looking professional.

How do you balance managing your personal time with a highly unpredictable field schedule?

I manage it by building flexibility into my personal life. Because I understand that field infrastructure work doesn't always end exactly at 5:00 PM due to complex tech issues, I don't schedule strict personal commitments on work nights. I treat the completion of the job ticket as my priority.

Are you comfortable with a position where your weekly pay depends heavily on how many tickets you complete?

Yes, I am incredibly comfortable with that and actually prefer it. A production incentive structure motivates me because it rewards efficiency, focus, and strong work ethic. It means the harder and smarter I work to complete clean, mistake-free installations, the more control I have over my weekly paycheck.

How do you ensure you are well-rested and alert for driving early morning shifts?

I maintain a highly disciplined sleep and health routine. I make sure I get a full 8 hours of sleep before every shift, eat a nutritious breakfast, and avoid heavy caffeine crashes. Staying sharp and alert is a safety requirement when you are operating a heavy commercial vehicle on public roads.

How do you work effectively within a small team during large-scale network rollouts?

I focus on clear communication and defined roles. In my engineering coursework, complex projects succeeded because everyone knew exactly what module they were responsible for. On a telecom team rollout, I make sure I understand my specific assignments, keep my teammates updated on my progress, and immediately step in to help pull cable or prep hardware if my section is done ahead of schedule.

Describe a time you worked on a team project where a member wasn't pulling their weight. (1.9 Soft Skills & Relocation)

What type of management style helps you learn technical skills most efficiently?

I learn best under a 'demonstrate then shadow' management style. I appreciate a trainer who shows me the correct, safe way to perform a task once—explaining the why behind the process—and then watches me do it while providing direct, real-time corrections. That feedback loop helps me build correct muscle memory rapidly.
