A community with its own government in ancient Greece.
Citizen
A member of a polis who has legal rights and responsibilities.
Acropolis
A fortified hilltop in an ancient Greek city.

Aristocracy
A government ruled by a small group of noble, land-owning families.
Tyrant
A ruler who seized power by force, often supported by the middle and working classes; had absolute power.

Political power held by a small group of people.

A period when culture and literacy declined in Greece. Mainland Greeks moved to Ionia.
Advantages of Greece's Physical Geography
Raising goats and sheep, growing olives and grapes (for oil and wine), which could facilitate trade.
Disadvantages of Greece's Physical Geography
Limited good farming soil, mountains isolated people.
