serous membrane
a thin membrane lining the close cavities of the body, forms two layers , secretes fluid
-comparable to air in diagram

pareital layer
lines the internal surface of the organs, outer layer of serous membrane

visceral layer
covers external surface of organs

serous cavity
potential space between parietal and visceral layer, cavities lined with serous membrane

serous fluid
consistency of oil and serves as lubricant to prevent friction from organs rubbing against each other
dorsal body cavity aka posterior aspect
contains cavities that are completely encased in bone and are physically and developmentally different from the ventral cavity
the posterior aspect contains..
cranial cavity and vertebral canal

cranial cavity
aka endocranium
formed by cranial bones and contains brain

vertebral canal
formed by vertebral column and contains spinal cord

ventral cavity
thoracic cavity and abdominopelvic cavity
divided into subdivisions that do not encase organs to bone,
lined with serous membranes

thoracic cavity includes..
mediastinum, pleural cavity, pericardial cavity

Mediastinum
area between the lungs containing the heart, aorta, vena cava, esophagus, and trachea

pleural
lungs

pleural cavity
contains the lungs

thoracic diaphragm
- Major muscle of respiration
- Separates thoracic and abdominal cavities
- Dome shaped
-bulges into thorax

pericardal cavity
surrounds the heart

serous pericardium
thinner, more delicate membrane that forms a double layer around the heart

parietal paricardium
The outer wall of the pericardial sac.
Coats outside wall of the cavity.
layer of dense connective tissue and a thin serous layer.

visceral paricardium
membrane that covers the heart

abdominopelvic cavity
contains both the abdominal and pelvic cavities

abdominal cavity contains
stomach, spleen, liver, gallbladder, small intestine, most of large intestine

pelvic cavity contains
bladder, reproductive organs, rectum

peritoneum
a multilayered membrane that protects and holds the organs in place within the abdominal cavity

Paretial peritoneum
Lining of abdominal wall
visceral peritoneum
the inner layer of the peritoneum that surrounds the organs of the abdominal cavity

peritoneal cavity
space between the parietal and visceral peritoneum,
contains serous fluid for lubrication from friction of abdominal organs rubbing together
