Pregnancy
Scientifically defined as beginning at implantation when a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine wall.
Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG)
A hormone necessary to maintain an established pregnancy.
Primigravida
A woman who is pregnant for the first time.
Quickening
The first movement of the fetus that can be felt by the pregnant person, typically occurring around 18-20 weeks for a first pregnancy.
Embryo
The early stage of development in pregnancy, significant changes take place from fertilization until approximately 10 weeks.
Placenta
An organ that forms from the trophoblast and is responsible for metabolic exchange between the mother and fetus.
Morning Sickness
Nausea experienced by about 50% of pregnant people, typically occurring during the first trimester.
Nullipara
A woman who has never given birth.
Hyperemesis Gravidarum
Severe nausea during pregnancy that may require hospitalization, IV fluids, and anti-nausea medications.
Trimester
A division of pregnancy into three phases: first (0-14 weeks), second (14-28 weeks), and third (28 to 40 weeks).
