What are the two types of materials used to control non-life-threatening bleeding?
Dressings and bandages.
What does a dressing do?
A dressing directly touches and covers an open wound.
What is the purpose of a bandage in bleeding control?
A bandage holds a dressing in place.
What should you do if direct pressure does not stop bleeding within 5-10 minutes?
Add more dressings onto the first one and press harder over a wider area.
When should you apply a tourniquet?
If direct pressure fails to control massive bleeding from an arm or leg.
Where should a tourniquet be placed?
About 2 inches above the wound.
What is a key step after applying a tourniquet?
Write the time the tourniquet was applied on a tag or piece of tape.
What should you do if bleeding continues after applying a tourniquet?
Tighten the tourniquet or apply a second tourniquet above the first.
What are some symptoms of a concussion?
Thinking/remembering problems, physical symptoms, emotional/mood symptoms, sleep disturbances.
What do you do if someone has a suspected skull fracture?
DO NOT apply excessive pressure and control bleeding by pressing on the edges.
What is the RICE procedure used for?
It is used for treating bone, joint, and muscle injuries: Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation.
What is a sign that indicates shock?
Massive external or internal bleeding.
What should you do if someone is in shock but responsive?
Keep them flat on their back and raise their feet 6 to 12 inches if no leg injury is suspected.
What are the signs of a heart attack?
Chest discomfort, sweating, dizziness, nausea, shortness of breath.
What does FAST stand for in stroke assessment?
F: Face droops, A: Arm weakness, S: Speech difficulty, T: Time to call 9-1-1.
What action is critical if someone has a seizure lasting longer than 5 minutes?
Call 9-1-1 immediately.
What does hypoglycemia mean in terms of blood sugar?
Low blood sugar.
What should you do for someone suspected of hypoglycemia?
Have them eat 15-20 grams of sugar.
