Continents
north America, south America, europe, africa, australia, asia, antartica
oceans
Pacific Ocean: It touches the left side of the Americas and wraps all the way around the world to touch the right side of Asia and Australia.
Atlantic Ocean: The giant "S" shape in the middle of the map. It sits right between the Americas on one side, and Europe and Africa on the other.
Indian Ocean: right below India. It is caught in a triangle between Africa (to its left) and Australia (to its right).
Southern Ocean: very bottom of the map, forming a ring of ice-cold water around Antarctica.
Arctic Ocean: The smallest one sitting at the very top of the map, covering the North Pole.
Natural resources
renewable
non renewable
Renewable resources
materials that are replenished naturally more or less within the same time period when they are used
e.g - water and solar energy
Non renewable resources
may or may not be replenished naturally , or the natural processes occur very slowly and takes such a long time that it is beyond the period used
e.g - crude oil
Nature - centred view
seen as valuable itself
environment should be preserved
protected and retained in its original state as far as possible
use of physical environment should be minimised and even prohibited
Human centred view
valuable because humans can obtain materials from it for their use and benefit
motivated to find ways to extract natural resources for money
How to use natural resources sustainably
conservation and environmental footprint
Conservation
→ reduce our consumption
→reuse a product or material
→recycling turns used materials into new and useful ones
→ recover useful materials from the waste we produce
technological developments
influence our ability to identify and make use of resources
lead to discovery of more efficient uses of natural resources so that our environmental footprint can be reduced
e.g solar power
