Imagery
mental experience that mimics real experience
uses multiple senses (visual, auditory) without actual perception
Functions of imagery
cognitive - rehearsal of skills, strategies, and decision making
motivational - building confidence, regulating arousal and maintaining focus
specific - imagery for a particular skill or outcome
general - imagery for overall strategy, game plan, or mindset
Paivio’s imagery framework
classifies imagery by function (cognitive vs motivational) and application (specific vs general)
ex: gymnast imagines bar routine is cognitive specific + runner imagines pushing through fatigue at mile 20 is motivational general
PETTLEP model of imagery
used to create realistic and effective imagery
Physical - mimics body movements
Environment - imagine setting
Task - match imagery content with actual skill
Timing - rehearse at real speed
Learning - adapt imagery as skill develops
Emotion - include competition emotions
Perspective - internal or external
Comparison of PETTLEP and Paivio
PPETTLEP
focus on realism
improves skill transfer
hard to replicate perfectly realistic imagery
Paivio
focus on purpose (cognitive vs motivational)
Flexible and helps choose imagery type
Doesn’t explain how to structure imagery
