Mean Value (am)
The arithmetic mean of observed values a1,a2,…,an, which is taken as the true value of a measured quantity, given by am=na1+a2+⋯+an=n1∑i=1nai.
Absolute Error
The difference between the true value and the observed value, expressed as ∣Δai∣=∣am−ai∣, having the same unit as the quantity itself.
Mean Absolute Error (Δam)
The arithmetic mean of the magnitudes of absolute errors across all measurements, given by Δam=n∣Δa1∣+∣Δa2∣+⋯+∣Δan∣=n1∑i=1n∣Δai∣.
Relative Error
The ratio of the mean absolute error to the mean value of the quantity, calculated as amΔam, which has no unit.
Percentage Error
The relative error of a quantity expressed in percentage form, calculated as amΔam×100.
Error in Sum (Z=X+Y)
The maximum possible absolute error in Z when Z=X+Y, given by ΔZ=±(ΔX+ΔY).
Error in Difference (Z=X−Y)
The maximum possible absolute error in Z when Z=X−Y, given by ΔZ=±(ΔX+ΔY).
Fractional Error in Product (Z=XY)
The fractional change in Z when Z=XY, given by ZΔZ=±(XΔX+YΔY).
Fractional Error in Quotient (Z=YX)
The fractional change in Z when Z=YX, given by ZΔZ=±(XΔX+YΔY).
Fractional Error in Exponential (Z=Xn)
The fractional change in Z when Z=Xn, given by ZΔZ=±nXΔX.
Fractional Error in Power Combination (Z=WcXaYb)
The fractional change in Z when Z=WcXaYb, given by ZΔZ=±(aXΔX+bYΔY+cWΔW).
Percentage Error in Power Combination (Z=WcXaYb)
The percentage error in Z when Z=WcXaYb, calculated as ZΔZ×100=±(aXΔX+bYΔY+cWΔW)×100.
Fractional Error in Combination (Z=X+YXY)
The fractional change in Z when Z=X+YXY, given by ZΔZ=XΔX+YΔY+X+YΔX+ΔY.
