What was the First Continental Congress?

In September 1774 all colonies except Georgia sent at least one delegate to Philadelphia to a Continental Congress. Most of the 56 delegates were men who had played prominent local roles in opposition to Britain over the decade.

He thought the congress was almost equally divided between radicals (Sam Adams, Patrick Henry) and moderates (John Dickinson).

What did Congress do?

It endorsed the Suffolk Resolves, and called for non-importation of all British goods, starting on 1 December 1774, unless Parliament repealed the Coercive acts. A ban on exports to Britain would start in September.

What happened on 14th October 1774?

Congress agreed on a Declaration of Rights and Grievances. While acknowledging allegiance to the Crown, it denied that the colonies were subject to Parliament's authority.
