Conflict
Occurs when an individual or group feels negatively affected by another individual or group; involves perceived incompatibility of interests, some interdependence, and some form of interaction.
Goal Conflict
One of the four basic types of conflict identified in conflict management.
Cognitive Conflict
One of the four basic types of conflict identified in conflict management.
Affective Conflict
One of the four basic types of conflict identified in conflict management.
Procedural Conflict
One of the four basic types of conflict identified in conflict management.
Intrapersonal Conflict
A level of conflict that occurs within an individual and may involve goal, cognitive, or affective conflict.
Cognitive Dissonance
A form of intrapersonal conflict involving three types: Approach/Approach, Avoidance/Avoidance, and Approach/Avoidance.
Role Conflict
A form of intrapersonal conflict involving three types: Person-role conflict, Intrarole conflict, and Interrole conflict.
Interpersonal Conflict
A level of conflict involving two or more individuals who believe their attitudes, behaviors, or preferred goals are in opposition.
Intragroup Conflict
A level of conflict involving clashes among some or all of a group’s members, which often affect processes and effectiveness; includes Relationship, Task, and Process types.
Intergroup Conflict
A level of conflict involving opposition and clashes between groups, categorized as Vertical, Horizontal, Line-staff, or Diversity-based.
Interorganizational Conflict
A level of conflict occurring between organizations due to interdependence on membership and divisional or system-wide success.
Assertiveness
A dimension of conflict-handling modes defined as attempting to satisfy one's own concerns.
Cooperativeness
A dimension of conflict-handling modes defined as attempting to satisfy others' concerns.
Competition
A conflict-handling mode characterized as being Assertive and Uncooperative.
Collaboration
A conflict-handling mode characterized as being Assertive and Cooperative.
Avoiding
A conflict-handling mode characterized as being Unassertive and Uncooperative.
Accommodation
A conflict-handling mode characterized as being Unassertive and Cooperative.
Compromise
A conflict-handling mode located in the middle of the assertiveness and cooperativeness dimensions.
Negotiation
The process by which two or more parties decide what each will give and take in an exchange.
Distributive Negotiation Model
A negotiation approach characterized as win–loss.
Integrative Negotiation Model
A negotiation approach characterized as win–win.
Interactive Negotiation Model
A negotiation approach characterized as joint problem-solving.
