Why do lipids need lipoproteins?
Lipids are not very water soluble, so lipoproteins help transport them in blood
What do chylomicrons do?
they carry triglycerides from the intestines to the liver, muscle, and adipose tissue
What does VLDL do?
VLDL carries newly made triglycerides from the liver to adipose tissue
What does LDL do?
LDL carries cholesterol from the liver to body cells
Why is LDL called “bad” cholesterol?
High LDL can raise cholesterol in blood and increase risk of plaque buildup
What does HDL do?
HDL collects cholesterol from tissues and brings it back to the liver
Why is HDL called “good” cholesterol?
It helps remove excess cholesterol from tissues and blood
What is faulty cholesterol transport?
When LDL is high and HDL is low, cholesterol is not being moved properly
What enzyme do statins inhibit?
HMG-CoA reductase
How do statins lower cholesterol?
They block HMG-CoA reductase, which lowers cholesterol synthesis
What is PCSK9?
A protein that binds LDL receptors and causes them to be degraded
How do PCSK9 inhibitors lower LDL cholesterol?
They stop PCSK9 from destroying LDL receptors, so more LDL receptors stay in liver cells and remove LDL from blood
What type of drug is a PCSK9 inhibitor?
A monoclonal antibody
