Periodontium
Tissues that support the teeth
Gingival unit
Part of the periodontium composed of free gingiva, attached gingiva, and alveolar mucosa
Attachment unit (attachment apparatus)
Part of the periodontium composed of cementum, alveolar process, and periodontal ligament
Free gingiva
Gum tissue that extends from the gingival margin to the base of the gingival sulcus
Gingival papilla
Free gingiva located in the triangular interdental spaces
Lamina propria
Connective tissue fibers that intermingle with the fibers of the attached gingiva and the periodontal ligament
Attached gingiva
Gingiva that is not mobile and attached to the bone underneath
Rete peg formation
Irregular binding of the epithelium to bone by collagen fibers, causing stippling
Sharpey's fibers
Fibers embedded in the cementum or alveolar bone that keep the gingiva closely attached to the tooth
Alveolar mucosa
Covers the buccal surfaces of the mandibular and maxillary teeth and the lingual surfaces of mandibular teeth
Cementum
Hard, bonelike tissue covering the roots of teeth
Periodontal ligament
Tissue that surrounds the roots of the teeth and connects them to alveolar bone
Alveolar bone
Thin covering of compact bone that surrounds teeth
Cementoblasts
Cells that form cementum
Cellular cementum
Cementum with embedded cementoblasts
Acellular cementum
Cementum free of embedded cementoblasts
Alveolar bone proper
Lines the sockets in which the roots of teeth are held
Alveolus
Socket in which the tooth rests
Bundle bone
Forms the inner bone of the alveolus
Lamina dura
Attachment lining of bone around the tooth
Alveolar process
Surrounds and supports teeth in the maxilla and mandible
Cortical bone
Dense compact bone that surrounds the outside of the alveolar process
Trabecular bone
Softer cancellous bone that forms the inside of the alveolar process
Interdental bone or interdental septum
Trabecular bone located between teeth
Interradicular bone or interradicular septum
Trabecular bone located between roots
Basal bone
Main part of the maxilla and mandible that supports the alveolar process
Periodontal Ligament (PDL)
Tiny meshwork of collagenous connective fibers surrounding the tooth
Alveolar crest group
Group of periodontal ligament fibers that extend from the cervical area to the alveolar crest
Horizontal group
Group of periodontal ligament fibers that extend horizontally from tooth to alveolar bone
Oblique group
Group of periodontal ligament fibers that extend obliquely from tooth to bone
Apical group
Group of periodontal ligament fibers that extend apically from tooth to bone
Interradicular group
Group of periodontal ligament fibers located between roots of multirooted teeth
Gingival sulcus
Space facing sulcular gingiva
Dentogingival junction
Where the tooth surface meets the gingival tissue
Masticatory mucosa
Mucosa that makes up both free and attached gingiva
0.5 to 2 mm
The average depth of the gingival sulcus in millimeters
Hard palate
Dense collagen fibers are found in the gingival unit and also on the…
Free gingiva
Circular lamina propria fibers encircle the teeth and tie them together, keeping the _ firm.
Attachment
Cementoblasts, fibroblasts, and osteoblasts replace cementum, periodontal ligaments, and alveolar bone in the unit.
Trabeculations
Bundle bone is formed from many layers but does not have ___
Mucogingival
The alveolar mucosa joins the attached gingiva at the junction
Nutritive
The function of the periodontal ligament related to blood vessels
Sensory
The function of the periodontal ligament that sends signals of pressure and pain
Periodontal ligament
The tissue surrounding the tooth helps hold it in the alveolar bone and suspends it like a hammock in its socket
PDL
Adaptability and versatility of this allows orthodontic work
Gingiva
Interdental depression, mucogingival junction, interdental papilla, free gingival groove, attached gingiva and alveolar mucosa make up the
Dentogingival junction
The location where bacteria can invade the body
Gingival sulcus
Space facing the sulcular gingiva
Bone
The lamina propria is attached to ____ underneath it.
Alveolar mucosa
Tissue that lines the rest of the mouth, is mobile, and tears easily
