Autocratic Leadership
Also called directive or dictatorial leadership, an approach where leaders make decisions without consulting employees and expect orders to be complied with obediently.
Democratic Leadership
Also called consultative or consensus leadership, an approach where leaders involve employees in decision-making and make the final decision after receiving team members' inputs and recommendations.
Participative Leadership
Also known as open or non-directive leadership, an approach where the leader exerts little control in the decision-making process and allows team members to develop strategies and solutions.
Goal-Oriented Leadership
Also called results-based or objective-based leadership, an approach where leaders ask team members to focus solely on the goals at hand and only pay attention to strategies that make a definite, measurable contribution.
Situational Leadership
Also known as fluid or contingency leadership, an approach where the leader selects the leadership style based on existing circumstances and factors like relationships with employees.
Leadership Style in a Total Quality Setting
Participative leadership taken to a higher level, involving soliciting input from empowered employees, listening to that input, and acting on it.
Employee Empowerment
A management approach wherein decision-making is shared with subordinates, giving employees the responsibility to make improvements and the authority to make changes in the organization.
Brainstorming
An empowerment implementation method where managers serve as facilitators drawing out recommendations from group members, treating all ideas as valid before weighing their relative merits.
Nominal Group Technique
A sophisticated form of brainstorming involving 5 steps, ending with employees silently voting on their top 5 favorite ideas recorded separately on 3×5 cards.
Quality Circles
A group of employees that meets regularly for the purpose of identifying, recommending, and making workplace improvements.
Suggestion Boxes
Vessels placed in convenient locations into which employees may put written suggestions for the process improvement of the organization.
Walking and Talking
A method that requires managers to simply walk around the workplace and solicit inputs or suggestions from employees for process improvement.
Google Cafés
Free day and night food services provided at Google offices to encourage interactions across teams and spark work conversations, serving as an example of managerial commitment to empowerment.
Apple Distinguished Schools
A network of 400 schools in 29 countries established by Apple to promote leadership and educational excellence through technology.
Toyota Empowerment Example
An empowerment example where line workers at Toyota Corporation can intervene in the production process to stop defective cars from coming off the assembly line.
Credibility
A characteristic of quality leaders who are consistent and fair in adhering to the same standards of performance and behavior expected of others.
Steadfastness
A characteristic of quality leaders who are committed to finishing a task despite difficulty.
