Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) Model
A framework developed by ISO to promote understanding of network components through seven discrete layers.
Seven layers of OSI model
Physical Layer
The lowest layer of the OSI model responsible for the physical connection between devices.
Data Link Layer
The layer responsible for node-to-node data transfer and detecting errors in the Physical layer.
Network Layer
The layer responsible for determining the best path for data transfer across a network.
Transport Layer
The layer that ensures complete data transfer and error recovery between the two hosts.
Session Layer
The layer that manages sessions between end-user applications.
Presentation Layer
The layer responsible for translating data formats, including encryption and compression.
Application Layer
The topmost layer that interacts directly with end-user applications.
Functional guideline
The purpose of the OSI model is to serve as a functional guideline for designing network protocols and troubleshooting.
