Vocabulary flashcards covering clinical instruments, materials, and accessories used in a posterior composite restorative dental setup.

Mouth mirror

A round mirror used for indirect vision, retracting the cheek/tongue, and reflecting light into areas the operator cannot see directly.

College/cotton pliers

An instrument used to pick up and transfer small items—such as cotton pellets, cotton rolls, wedges, matrix components, or other materials—without touching them directly.

Explorer / diagnostic explorer

A pointed instrument used to examine tooth surfaces, margins, pits and fissures, and restoration margins.

Restorative hand instrument

A double-ended, angled instrument used to carry, adapt, contour, or sculpt restorative material.

Aspirating dental anesthetic syringe

A metal syringe holding a local-anesthetic cartridge and needle, used to deliver local anesthetic before treatment; aspiration checks for accidental intravascular needle placement before injection.

Local-anesthetic cartridges

Glass cartridges containing local anesthetic solution that are loaded into an aspirating syringe.

Tofflemire-style retainer

A matrix retainer used to hold a matrix band around a tooth when rebuilding a missing proximal wall, helping contain composite and establish the contour/contact area.

Sectional matrix system

A system using a thin matrix and a separation ring/wedge to recreate a proximal wall and tight contact between posterior teeth.

Etchant / phosphoric-acid etching gel

A gel applied to enamel and/or dentin for a specified time in an adhesive protocol to condition the tooth surface before rinsing and bonding.

Dental composite syringe

A syringe containing tooth-colored resin composite that is placed into the prepared tooth in increments and shaped/contoured before light curing.

Ivoclar VivaPen

A pen-style dental adhesive dispenser that delivers bonding agent onto the prepared tooth during an adhesive restorative procedure.

Microbrushes / disposable applicators

Disposable tools used to pick up and apply etchant, bonding agent, primer, or other small quantities of dental material to a tooth surface.

LED curing light (Radii-cal)

A dental light-curing unit whose blue-light output polymerizes light-cured composite and adhesive materials so they harden.

Dental floss

Thread passed through the interproximal contact after restoration to verify that the contact is present and that excess restorative material is not blocking the space.

Wooden/plastic wedge

A wedge placed interproximally beneath/along the matrix to adapt the matrix against the tooth, help prevent overhangs, and provide slight tooth separation for a proper contact.
